TV Antenna

Post by zeida cecilia »

Can anyone recommend a TV antenna for the top of my mast? I'm looking for one that's at most 10" inches outside diameter or less. Shakespeare only advertises one that is 14" inches, and It seems to me this is much too big for up there. I've looked in all marine catalogs, but can not find one small enough or good enough. Any comments will be appreciated.

Zeida,

I am installing a newly purchased Dantronics Triax UFO Antenna Boat/US
129.99. I find this one to be small enough to mount on the mast - it is 10" in diameter. The older model of this one was highly rated by Practical Sailor a few years back and our friends used it on their Tartan 37 going back and forth on the inland waterway with no complaints. I had the older model on the mast but you couldn't tell if the unit was getting power to the pre-amp. The newer ones have a small red LED light underneath it and you can easily see it on the mast to show its on etc. I will not vouch for its power to bring in stations since in Groton CT we are surrounded by the University of CT Avery point branch and reception is not good no matter what you use. I am just hoping that it will work on our trip down the waterway this fall to get local weather etc. Good Luck.

Funny this topic came up this weekend. I just made a TV antenna for about $10 and it worked better than the rabbit ears, but not as good as cable reception. It allowed me to see the local weather in Annapolis harbor, when the rabbit ears did not give reception clear enough to see the map.
Its basically two pieces of flat aluminum bent into a round shape and then screwed to a piece of wood NOT allowing the aluminum pieces to touch. Antenna wire is attached with one lead to one section of Al and the other lead to the other piece. The wire is then fed to a 300- 75ohm mini jack that is plugged into the TV. Hoist up the spreader halyard and it worked.
Use the Boatenna in the West catalogue as a guide.
BTW the weather report was for unseasonably cold temps to last for two days and it was frigid.
