CD26 hull -- solid fiberglass or cored??

Post by Peter K. »

I'm ready to purchase a depth sounder for my Cape Dory 26. I will not put a through-hull transducer in because I have this psychotic aversion to drilling a hole in the hull of my boat. So, I have decided to use an in-hull mounting of a transom mount transducer. Of course, these will not work with a cored hull, only with a solid fiberglass hull. My assumption is that the CD26 has such a hull and I should have no problem in making this work. But, before I spend the money on the depth sounder (actually I'm going to use a fish-finder) I'd like to be sure that it'll work on my boat. Could you folks please confirm this for me, specifically for the CD26. Is the hull of the CD26 solid fiberglass that will allow me to use an in-hull transducer. Again, my thanks for your help.

Peter,

You will be happy to hear it is fiberglass...approximately 3/8 inch thick at the turn of the keel with about 9 layers....

Dana,
Many thanks. I was pretty sure it was solid fiberglass, but just wanted to hear it from someone with more experience with these boats to be absolutely certain. I just spent 4 days up on the boat trying to get her ready for launching, but the weather was around 30 degrees and rainy, so I didn't get as much done as I wanted to. I did a lot of snooping around and found out lots of things about this boat that I didn't know before. I have a great feeling about this boat -- think I have made a great choice for a retirement present for myself. Again, your comments are always appreciated. I'm still working on a name for her that I like -- have had several ideas, but they just don't sound right after a few days. It's almost as hard to pick the right name as it is to sand the bottom!!

Peter,
As a suggestion, you might consider naming her after a family member or a loved one. I named "Sadie" (my CD 25) after my mom...it's uncanny how it turns out that they are so similar.
Also don't forget to do a renaming ceremony- very important. Info on how is discussed in old messages.
good luck,
Bill
