Opinions/Experience Volvo HS1 gear

Post by Tony Raymond »

It's a long story, but the short of it is my MS4 gear fractured a tooth while we were running and it trashed the whole thing. The mechanic says that it is unrepairable. So Now I'm looking at the HS1 as a replacement, and I would like your collective experience with and opinion of the HS1.

Thanks
Tony

What has to be changed.

When you retrofit from an MS4 to an HS1 on a TAMD41, what needs to change. I've been told 1. The HS1 gear, 2. The Flywheel, 3 The dampener plate, 4. the mounting plate/flange and 5. Cooling water pipes. The question I have is, Does the top cover of the intercooler have to change or do the new pipes fit the old one?

HS1 Transmission (CD powerboats)

Post by Walt Bilofsky »

Tony -

I've had the HS1's for about 100 hours now and have nothing bad to say about them. The starboard HS1 is noisy at idle which Helmut says is due to backlash. He showed me another boat which made the same noise. But the port HS1 is quiet at idle.

There is no clunking when going into gear (since there's no cone clutch to clunk).

The main differences are the smoother shifting, and a noticeable decrease in noise. It was amazing that the MS4 transmissions were noisy enough to hear above the engines, but they were. It's not a huge bunch quieter now, but it is noticeable.

The big reason for switching from MS4's to HS1's was reliability, and only time will tell about that. But everyone seems to agree that they are built better, and the MS4's are known to be a problem.

The replacement does involve changing out the flywheel, and the intercooler needs a different top. All the new parts can be ordered as a single kit - I don't know if the dealer orders the transmission and the parts kit as a single item, or the tranny as one item and the parts kit as another.

You might see if your dealer can get Volvo to help out with the cost of the replacement, since you've had such headaches with the MS4. Or contact Volvo-Penta customer relations directly.
