Question for 25D Owners

Post by Lou Ostendorff »

Hello to All;
I did some engine servicing last week, and when I removed the impeller to check it, I noticed that I couldn't stop the raw water flow, even though the raw water valve ( a ball valve) was closed. I don't know the brand, but apparently it has a brass ball which has deteriorated, and is leaking. My first question is, was this setup standard on other 25Ds, and if so, what model seacock did you use to replace it with? TIA

Good Morning Lou

Rhapsody is an '84 model and she came with a Spartan Marine Sea Cock....If you have to replace it, go with the Spartan model. quality stuff...OR you might give Roger at Bristol Bronze a shout....He can probably help.

On another subject, does anyone use a Group U-1 battery for starting their Yanmar 1GM??? I have installed a deck hatch under the quarter berth (aft of the water tank) and there is quite a bit of storage there. I pretty sure that I could lay a gel cell/AGM U-1 battery on it side and seperate my house bank from the starting battery IF the U-1 will do the job?

Good Luck and fair winds.

Lou:
I too, have a Spartan bronze seacock on my 1984 CD-25D. I seem to recall that some early Ty's had gate valves, but after that was corrected, all boats left the factory with Spartan seacocks, so it seems your ball valve was an "upgrade" by a previous owner.
There's a lot of commentary on the pros and cons of different types of seacocks in the archives, you may want to review that before making a change, but I'd vote to replace with a bronze tapered shaft style.

Hi Bill:

Ditto the same on Ranger my CD25D 1984 #144, Spartan Marine Bronze Seacock as the Kingston valve for the 1GM.

BTW I don't think putting a battery behind the quarter berth water tank is a good idea because she will sit deeper by the stern. I have a hot water tank in the area behind the quarterberth and the weight of the water and tank make Ranger sit lower than I would prefer. Introducing additional drag by the stern which translates into less boat speed. I have found that the CD25D performs significantly better with the weight forward in lieu of being in the back end. The stern squat on Ranger is partially offset by the weight of my ground tackle in the anchor well but this introduces another undesirable, high polar moment. Best advice is to keep both ends light if you are seeking performance.

Thanks Bob

I am hoping to use a Group U-1 battery which weighs in at 24 pounds....And not being as far aft as it might be in perhaps the starb'd locker I am hoping it doesnt effect the stearn weight that much. also, It should help offset her tendency to list to port due to the two battery bank located there.

I have also considered putting a battery under the cabin sole via the bilge opening....But I am still brain storming this project..

Thanks again & fair winds

Bill
