I removed the spreaders from the mast and shrouds intending to replace the spreader boots. Two problems: How do I secure the spreader to the shroud? The old connecting "wire" was totally rusted away so no example. Also, where can I get new spreader boots? The outside diameter of the spreaders on my Ty is 3/4" and the smallest spreader boots on the internet and West Marine are for 1" diameter spreaders.

Re: Spreader to shroud on TY?
Mike,
On my spreaders, there is a hole near the tip that is just inside of the channel at the tip through which the shroud runs. A wire was wrapped around the shroud above the spreader, run through the hole and wrapped around the shroud below the spreader. On one side, the wire was doubled first, but I don't think that matters. There wasn't anything particularly artful about the way this was done. The whole thing was covered by the boot. I don't think it needs to be particularly tight. The idea is to keep the shroud in its channel when the shroud is loose on the leeward side. Also, if it's too tight, the spreader would be pulled up or down when you're adjusting shroud tension, which wouldn't be a good thing.
I bought the smallest spreader tip boots that West Marine sells. When I wrapped the spreader end with rigging tape I was able to close any gap. But if there is a gap, I don't think it matters. I think the point is to keep the spreader tip and wire from snagging anything, not to seal against the elements.
I don't know if there needs to be anything more to it than that.
Maybe I'll see you the weekend of the 4th of July for the CD gathering. Fair winds!

Re: Spreader to shroud on TY?
buy the smallest west marine has if that's where you shop. close the ends with rigging tape. better to have a little play and gap so it does not hold water or condensation and cause corrosion.
