The addition of line controls to the traveller, or replacing it with a totally new system with line controls, is definitely worth the expense. Hanalei will be a much safer and easier to control yacht with this setup. I think you should bite the bullet and spring for the upgrade.

I used to love to try and ease that pin stop traveler when I really needed to....under load! If was tougher to harden it too and try and steer at the same time. The Harken 3:1 traveler makes it a breeze.

On my former CD28, I had an aft traveler. I liked the ease with which the traveler could be adjusted but it was a pain to set the pins especially since your attention was directed away from where you were headed. My present boat has a mid-traveler arrangement but would benefit with the addition of infinite line controls instead of fixed pin placement. Trimming is an art and if you're able to find the perfect slot it makes sailing more enjoyable. IMHO

One more voice in favor. I hope soon to upgrade our 30 and I think I'd use a Schaefer traveler and car, etc. We had mid-boom sheeting on our 28 and one of the spring loaded pins failed underway (you really want that to happen in the big race). Rig Rite couldn't replace them, and sold us an arrangement (part Fico, part something else, as I recall) that looked very much like what I remember on Don's B model. I'd deal with Schaefer, though. They have told me in the past that they have to have the old traveler track to duplicate the curve. It seems to me a tracing of the arc and the basic dimensions would suffice, but you might give them a call.

WIN the RACE......One tactic I used this year last, was to ease the mainsheet traveler slightly to lee'ard until a slight bubble appeared in the luff of the main'sl, thereby easing the weather helm and heel, and picked up 1/2 a knot which added to the +15 minute finish time over the rest of the FLEET! ! !
