Simple question. How do they measure for the size of the jib? When its said that its a 50% or 110% jib what is ment by this and what is the formula. While Im asking, dose any one know the meaning of life.

Well the jib question is a tough one. Glad you just asked about the meaning of life, that's the easy one. Just kidding.

The % measure is the percentage of the sail area of the foretriangle. That is the measure of the forestay length, mast height to the forestay, and the deck measure from mast to forestay. That area is %100. Anything above %100 is more than that area and likewise for the %50 measure.

The meaning of life is what you sail for, so that you have something to contemplate on those big sky nights while sailing on the breeze. Or when the weather throws what it can at you. Then you are face to face with the meaning of life. When you get there let us know.

Adam the size of the jib is stated as the area of the fore triangle.
That is a line drawn from the mast to the deck to the forestay to the mast. That would be the triangle which is the area of the jib. A 100% would fill that area, a 135% is 35 % greater than that area. Call any sail loft and they will telll you how to measure your Typhoon to determine the size.

And the meaning of life can be found on my CD 25. I apologize for not asking you togo out with us for a sail. And the yacht is still for sale...

It looks like others have explained the jib measurements. I'm not sure about the meaning to life, but according to the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy the answer to life is 42.
