Fortunately for me, the PO of Second Chance replaced all the standing rigging in 1995 so I got it all essentially new in 1998. The forestay, backstay and upper shrouds still look like new, and the lower shrouds look new except for the swages at the bottom. Two of the turnbuckle studs are slightly bent and all of the turnbuckles look original, with alot of the plating corroded off. The 5/32 wire looks good, and the upper swages and terminals look fine.
I'd like to replace the turnbuckles and the studs.
My options would seem to be:
1. Replace the lower swaged studs with sta-lok or norseman long studs and add new turnbuckles.
2. Make all new shroud assemblies from sta-lok or norsemen. (The wire's not that expensive--the terminals are!) But I'm figuring as long as I am replacing some of the assembly, why not start fresh?
3. Order new swaged shroud assemblies from a quality rigging loft.
What do other CDers think?

Replacing my lower shrouds this spring

Bill:
Replacing the studs and turnbuckles is simple as can be, and is the easiest if the rig is up. If she's down, it's mostly about price and a little about timing, as you will have to send the old stuff to the rigger to make up replacements.
There is probably a total of two hours of labor in replacing the lowers, and one hour if you just swap out the old for new (including coffee and a celebratory amber-colored beverage).
Check around for norseman/sta-lok fittings (pricing varies at the catalog places) and call The Rigging Loft in Fairhaven, MA (www.riggingonly.com 508-992-0434) and ask for Tom the Rigger. He will opine on the merits of the options, and quote you on a set of lowers. He might even give you a good price on the norseman stuff.
If you opt for new turnbuckles and long-stud sta-loks, let me know who has the best prices, as I have one mildly bent stud myself.

If you have not replaced the shrouds since l995, replace all of them pronto. There is a life span on this stuff, and you have passed it.
Not nice when a shroud breaks when you are out in the nasty stuff!

Standing Rigging has a lifespan of less than 7 yrs (nm)

Re: Replacing my lower shrouds this spring
Hi Bill
We replaces all the wire and fittings on our CD25 2 years ago with Sta-Loks. We ordered the bronze, open fittings and have been very happy with them. The bronze are special order but no more money and not hard to get but look "right". The open fittings are much better than the old closed screw design.
We plan on doing the same on our CD27 but won’t be at this stage for several more months. We also plan on taking advantage of this opportunity to convert to a tabernacle so we won't be at the mercy of the "yard" while travelling.
