"help" documenting problems

Post by Paul Waine »

Have CD-25D and am trying to document the vessel. The documentation people say the vessel does not weigh enough but I know other CD-25D's that are documented. Is there anyone out there who can help or knows of a company that does this exclusively? Maybe I filled out the forms wrong. Also, while I have you, my Yanmar 1GM 9 H.P. seems to be smoking excessively. The stern is always in need of cleaning. Is this unique or does everyone have this problem?

"Weight" refers to "net tons" where documentation is concerned. The net tonnage is arrived at by measuring the hull length times the hull width times the internal height from keelson to the level of the deck of the boat and then through a formula determining what the net tonnage of the vessel is ie., how much weight it can carry. I don't remember the formula but a 25' boat is on the hairy edge of meeting the minimum size. My old boat was 25'3"x7'3"x 6'6" and made 5.9 net tons. I think 5.5 is the minimum. I used a company called Marine Documentation Service, Inc. in Fairfield CT. I expect any surveyor could point you in the right direction. If I figure out the formula I'll post it.

You may want to give BoatUS a call. The number for their documentation service is 703-941-3136. I've never had bad luck with any of their services. Good luck. Jerry

It's about volume, not weight. The documentation forms give you a shortcut way of putting in the various measurements.

Paul,

You may not be able to apply for new documentation. A couple of years ago, I believe, the minimum cargo tonnage was increased. The minimum size boat is now somewhere in the 28' foot range. There were just too many documentation of smaller boats, many of them required by marine banks. Earlier documentation for the 25D (and my CD26) still remain valid. As mentioned, Boat U.S. should be able to tell you.

Paul,

I went through the documentation procedure for my CD 25D "LOKI", with the USCG, did all of the paperwork myself and saved a bunch of money. If the folks working on your documentation say the boat is not documentable, then they are probably not the folks for the job. Give the Coast Guard a call, they will send you all of the applicable paperwork, you will be done in less than a month, probably two weeks.

I didn't read the other responses, so if I am duplicating someones effort, sorry.

Best of Luck,

Lee

I redocumented my 30 ft Cape Dory last year. I had to fill out a few forms, but saved time and money. The Coast Guard was very helpful. You need to contact the Coast Guard at:

National Vessel Documentation Center
2039 Stonewall Jackson Drive
Falling Waters, WV 25419

Phone Numbers:
Toll Free: (800) 799-8362
Main: (304) 271-2400

Fax Numbers:
Main: (304) 271-2405
Credit Card: (304) 271-2415
Renewals: (304) 271-2541

The Coast Guard web site at www.uscg.mil has these contact numbers and some of the forms online. Determining your tonnage is done by filling in form CG5397 "Application for Simplified Measurement".

If your vessel was ever documented the numbers would be marked on your hull, and it will speed up the process.

Good luck,
