Inexpensive Mooring Options In Boston/North Boston/South Bos

Post by Bob Dugan »

My wife and I live in Wayland, MA which unfortunately is landbound.

During the summer (June -> August) we plan to keep our 25D off a mooring in Casco Bay, Maine.

We'd like to squeeze a little more sailing time in the spring and fall. So we're thinking about mooring the boat somewhere in the Boston area... Gloucester is about as far North that we'd go and Scituate is about as far south.

Anyone have an inexpensive mooring ideas??? I know that Salem Harbor, for example, has several mooring companies that will put in a mooring. I'm just not sure I'd like having the boat in Salem Harbor... I might want to try it out for a season or something.

Thanks!

Bob,
I'm from Long Island NY so I don't know too much about facilities in Mass. I do know that my wife and I spent some time in Rockport Mass, just a little further up from Gloucester, and they have a nice little harbor full of moorings there. I don't know if its restricted to residence. I don't know what they charge. Of course in the summer, there are loads of tourists you may have to contend with but its a thought. Also saw some other mooring areas around the Cape Ann area. Essex and the like. May be worth a look.

some of the marine stores along rt 3A in quincy, weymouth, and hingham have moorings - easiest thing to do would be drive down and ask - hewitt's cove marina (781-749-6647) in weymouth (on rt 3A) may have moorings left - there are a few marinas in nantasket also -

i think there are marinas in winthrop, lynn, swampscott etc and the easiest thing would probably be to drive up along the coast and ask, it's an interesting drive anyway -

salem harbor is quite sheltered and leads easily into nice sailing areas up the coast to gloucester - gloucester is very interesting but also very commercial with some relatively big fishing etc. boats going in and out - rockport i would guess is unavailable, last time i was there you could practically walk across the harbor on the boats there were so many

if you wouldn't mind the extra drive, the sailing in buzzard's bay is better with easy access to the elizabeth islands, martha's vineyard and so on - you could probably find some place on the boston side of the canal about 90 minutes from wayland - padanarum (dartmuth, mass) is lovely and very sheltered (call concordia yacht company there, they are likely to have moorings)

good luck

I grew up in Wayland and keep my boat in Manchester, MA. If you are talking about the early spring and late fall, call Crockers Boat Yard in Manchester. They might be able to rent you a mooring for a late-launcher/early hauler. Otherwise, I'd follow-up on the Salem option.

Where in Casco Bay do you keep her?

Bob,
I live in Sudbury and have a Typhoon and am searching for same. On the South Shore (Quincy, Scituate, Weymouth, etc.) I think all you will find are marina slips, which may run $100-200/month for early or late season sailing. The only moorings I have been able to find are in Salem Harbor with launch service from Village St. Pier in Marblehead. This is a great place to sail, fairly sheltered, I don't know how the parking is however. Good luck. John
