Motor for CD25

I have a 25 foot Cape Dory with an old 7.5 hp Evenrude needs to be replaced with a new one. What motors will fit in the well? Would like to stay with Evenrude. Any help thanks.

I have Typhoon Senior which has similar size m/well. I just purchased a 6hp Yamaha which pushs me to hull speed at half-throtle. The Sr. weighs 3300lbs so I would think the Yamaha 8hp w/dual thrust prop would push the 25 with no problem. The 6 & 8 are same dimensions and required no well modifications plus I have enough clearance for reasonable turning with engine itself. A good dealer should allow you to take the engine right to your boat to try it out. He may require you to pay first but then bring it back if it doesn't work and try another--mine did. I tried both the Honda 5 & 8hp 4-strokes, unfortunately they wouldn't fit. The 6hp has been a pleasant surprise because I also went with a short-shaft with the dual thrust prop to replace a long-shaft Yamaha 8hp. Someone told me that was because he had heard Alberg designed the outboard motorwells for short shafts. I don't know if that's true, but I have experienced better performance with less hp with the ss. Try experimenting. Good Luck.

Dear Jerry, I replaced a 9.9 Evinrude electric start long shaft with an 8 hp Evinrude Yachtwin on our '82 CD25 (#841). The 8 hp is lighter and has an even longer lower unit. Accordingly, now the prop rarely lifts out of the water in lumpy seas the way the 9.9 often did and my back is happier after installation and removal. In addition, the enhanced ability to turn the engine in the well gives the added advantage of getting in and out of tight marinas with grace and dignity. On the down side, I occaisionally wish I had more power (against adverse rips etc.) and the smaller engine seems to consume fuel at a greater rate. And then there is the choking blue smoke, the horrible 2-stroke whine not to mention the ecological guilt pangs all of which were undiminished by the purchase of the new engine. Good luck. BA

Let me know when you find one because there seems to be little agreement. I've looked online and the Merc 6 seems to be a good bet. For around $900.00 it seems to have all the right features.

Someone posted that the 6 hp and 8 hp are the same for non-planning boats. Is that true?

I like the light weight and ability to turn my old 6 hp now. In the Chesapeak Bay we don't have a lot of rip currents. I need a new one, however. It has two speeds fast and stalled.

Sorry about confusion. The 6hp and 8hp Yamaha outboards are the same exact physical dimensions, so what I was suggesting was if a 6hp Yamaha fits in a Typhoon Sr. motorwell the 8hp will probably fit in the 25 motorwell. Add a dualthrust prop and I think you might find it one alternative as an engine. For the most creative and perhaps best solution take a look at Dana's sites found in this website's links. The man has some excellent solutions and their very enjoyable to surf. Remember, a reputable dealer should allow you to purchase subject to your final approval, i.e. fits and powers boat--short sea trial.
Good luck.

I have a 1984 Johnson 8hp with long shaft I am looking to sell. Where are you located? I am in the Boston, MA area.
