CD-30 Water Heater Problem

Post by Jay Kanavos »

My father-in-law has a 1984 CD-30B cutter rig sailboat and is having problems with the engine cooler/water heater unit. Evidently, it needs to be replaced. However, it is in a compartment under the cockpit seats on the starboard side. He'd like to remove it to replace the unit, but it is too big and will not fit through the opening. Has anybody ever replaced something like this? If so, how did you get it out? Thanks, in advance, for any help in remedying this percular problem.

See the message posts over the past few days and you can read about the same situation on a CD33 and the recommendations and solutions. We have a 83 CD30 and several years ago I installed an Atlantic stainless 6 gallon. The water heaters are still available and fit through the opening just fine. They are good dependable heaters by the way.

I also have a 1984 CD30 with the water heater in the same location. You will have to dismantel the water heater while it is still inside the locker in order to get it out. It's not too dificult, just remove the small sheet metal screws holding the insulation jacket to the top and bottom covers. With the sheet metal removed, the tank core itself will clear the locker opening. If you plan on installing a new tank, I understand from prior posts on this board that there are now tanks available that will fit the locker opening. You can do a search on this board to find the relevant information.

Captain Kanavos,

Try the Atlantic T6E water heater. You can get it from Defender. It will fit through the port lazzerette with now problem. The one you are taking out, I agree, you will need to disassemble it in the locker. Don't even think of replacing it in kind, as the new heater by the same manufacture(I forget who that was.) now uses hard foam insulation, hence you would not be able to compress it even if you did take the top and bottom off. FWIW....

We had the same problem in our CD 33 with a 6-gal. Raritan in the port locker. We wrestled the old one out (it was rusted anyway) but there was no way the new one would go in. I ordered a 6-gal. Seaward rectangular model, probably the same size as Atlantic but not as good. We're installing it Friday. Stay tuned!

I installed a seaward 6 gal. elec/exchanger model last winter. It fit through the starboard locker with at least 3/8" to spare.. Built an angle base to secure it with plywood cushion against hull at slight angle to gain locker access. It works well at dock and takes 15-20 minutes of engine time away from dock. Be ready when you pressurize it..

Only a sissy needs hot water on a sailboat! Get rid of the tank and use the space to add battery capacity so you can have refrigeration to keep your beer cold!
