Hatch riser bolts ? ?

Hatch riser bolts ? ?
I need to replace two hatch risers on the Bowmar hatches on Hanalei. The trouble is, the bolts that hold the riser to the frame are stainless screwed into the aluminium frame. Guess what, they have corroded into place and are very difficult to move. So much so, that I have already broken the head off of one bolt. The Question is: What is the best penetrating oil and technique to use to remove these bolts?
I really don't want to drill them out and retap larger. Any and all suggestions will be appreciated.

Re: Hatch riser bolts ? ?
Dave,
I have the same problem. I used both Corrosion X and the other one that the car stores sell on my pedestal and managed to get three of the four bolts out after a long fight. I think I may have even used a torch on the bolts to break them loose. Patience is definitely necessary if you want them to come out whole. Drilling may be faster.
I'll be interested to see the other responses as we still have to tackle this on Parfait. All I was trying to do is get the prop off so I could straighten it out. It works fine now, but it can't be remounted until I drill out the remaining bolt; I don't think I have a choice about it at this point.
Keep on sailing,
Ken

Re: Hatch riser bolts ? ?
Dave: while you are in the subject of hatches, I need to replace the thick rubber gasket all around my forward Bowmar hatch on Bandolera, my CD-33. Do you know if Bowmar sells these gaskets directly to consumers, or if we need to go through a West Marine or similar, to order it? My gasket is so worn out, especially the front part, that when it rains or blows pretty hard I get water inside the V berth. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks a lot.

Re: Hatch riser bolts ? ?
Dave, Once you get those bolts out and to avoid future hassles on two metals, I have used a product called GS 600 teflon thread sealing compound (not the tape) both on stainless rivets bolts and screws. Helps prevent corrosion. Backing SS screws and bolts out of aluminum is much easier even after several years GS stands for General Sealants out of California, tel: 18007621144
A builder of aluminum boats turned me on to this stuff (a white creamy substance) 1/2 pint jar =$4.82

Re: Hatch parts...
Zeida,
Go to the BoatUS.com website and search on "hatches". the second page of what comes up will show parts for Bomar hatches, and yes, the gasket material is there. In fact, that is where I found the new Hatch Riser Arms that I am going to put on Hanalei. They show parts for hatches before 1990 and after 1990. If I remember right, there are two different sizes of gasket, so you will probably need to measure the old.

Zeida;
Here is the Pomanette Web site. I have found that things are cheaper through WM/Defender/BoatUS than from Pompanette directly.

Corrosion X is the way to go...
Dave,
I use Corrosion X to loosen stubborn bolts, lubricate, etc. Douse the bolt and let it sit overnight, give it a few whacks with a hammer and it should loosen up on you. After I started using corrosion x, I gave my wd-40 away. It's crap compared to Corrosion X.

Re: Corrosion X is the way to go...
Absolutely........ C-X is an excellent product. Another to try is PB Blaster that also is an excellent product and has been used for many years in the marine industry. I keep both of these products on hand. Be forewarned The C-X is a bit pricey and can be hard to find.

Re: Hatch parts...
parts are available directly through Bomar-also the sealant for the lexan is available and made by GE.
it is difficult to remove broken bolts as you are not able to get a drill in line with the holes.
i had to use a 7" long drill bit to remove broken bolt and retap-
good luck! :>)
