Interior Varnish
Up until now I have found the interior woodwork to be adequate by simply oiling it once a year..sort of the au natural look. After seeing a friends J30 with a very glossy teak/holly sole and very glossy wood work..I feel varnish envy. My question is this: Recommendations for high gloss varnishes and recommendations for satin
varnishes. Thanks in advance.

Re: Interior Varnish
Don,
Last year I re did all the varnish below on Macht Nichts. I did all the large panels with Epifanes "Rubbed effect interior varnish" and the trim, hand rails ect with Epifanes "High gloss" This way you get a contrast of finishes which looks beautiful. The sun catches the gloss on the trim, but the main larger panels are softer and rich in color.!!!!!

Re: Interior Varnish
Mike;
I was leaning to Epifanes. After looking at their site, they recommend the gloss as a filler coat followed by the hand rubbed. Did you do it that way? Frankly I am leaning toward just applying several coats of hand rubbed to act as sealer. Your idea of 'highlighting' is a good one as the gloss not only brings out some contrast but may wear better in those areas which possibly need more protection.
Thanks for your input.

Re: Interior Varnish
Don,
I do like Epifanes, did a great job. I did not use gloss as "filler"coat, primarily because the previous owner had already done it the way I described, so I just lightly sanded and applied three coats to all. Looks GREAT!!!!
I don't know how it will react to prviously oiled surfaces......
Michael.

Re: Interior Varnish
Don, I have used Epiphanes on exteriors with good results. Also, other brands including Interlux Schooner and Stoppani. Inside I've used Interlux Clipper Clear (old name; new name is 95 I think) which is a single part polyurethane. It holds up well, and has a clear rather than amber finish, letting the wood show through. It is pretty tough, and worked on the sole. It's also easy to work with. I haven't used a matt finish, but suspect either the Interlux or Epiphanes would do quite well.

Re: Interior Varnish
hi, I've been working on the interior with the epifanes satin "hand rubbed" as well... the manufacturer recommends 3-4 coats of high gloss varnish, followed by one to two of the satin. I've been sanding through the old oil, and after the varnish it looks gorgeous.
I've still got a ways to go before completion- if you find a less sanding labour intensive way, I'd love to hear it!

Re: Interior Varnish
A while back, we decided that oiling the teak with Amazon Golden oil for teak was a tiresome and marginally ineffective method of preserving our wealth of teak in the boat.(Cannot afford to replace it, that is for certain!). So we varnished. I used a marine Semi-Gloss for all wood work in the boat. We originally wanted to use all gloss, but that was way too much reflections and it was gross after seeing it on a sister ship to ours. So then we thought about satin finish, and rejected that as too soft. The relative hardness of varnish gets tougher as the finish gets gloss-ier, so the semi-gloss would work well..and it did.
I do like the idea of the highlights and trim done in gloss though. It should give a pleasing and interesting finish..will try that too.
Remember that you don't need Epiphanes UV protection inside the boat, so an interior (read less expensive) finish can be applied with no down side.

Re: Interior Varnish
Don,
I just finished varnishing my interior wood for my CD 25 and I love the results. I did three coats of Epifanes gloss followed by 2 coats of rubbed effect varnish. The last two coats really hide any inmperfections and really look good. Make sure you use Epifanes thinner. Good luck.
