I have a 1976 CD28 that has only a thru-hull from the head. Am thinking of putting a flexible holding tank in the bilge. Has anyone been down this road? I have replumbed waste systems on old boats before and am a firm believer of black hose with the vapor barrier. It is the tank itself that I am concerned about.
Thanks for any advice.

Practical Sailor did a recent study on waste hose....Sealand Odorsafe Hose, a white hose available from BoatUS and some others, turned out the best...including the black hoses. I am redoing my head now and am using this Odorsafe...8.00 a foot! I would also recommend a rigid poly tank rather than a flexible one....they are less prone to chafe, leaks, etc. You should have room somewhere on a CD28....lots of folks on this board should be able to give you advice on the best tank to order....Good luck!

$8.00 a foot for hose is a might expensive, especially when the real culpirt is probably the head itself! If you suck any of that green stuff along with the "outside" water, it get stuck in the innards of the head, and will rot there giving out that wonderful odor that folks believe comes from the hoses!
At the London Boat Show, one of the sponsors had a wonderful device for the head that uses fresh water from a five gallon tank-right into the head, using a Y valve to use this device instead of the "outside" water.
For the past many years in sailing the waters of the Northwest in various boats, I also have found that by rinsing the head with a quart of fresh water (that you just pour into the head) saves all sorts of odor problems.

I second the motion for the fresh water cure!
FWIW I use about a pint of fresh water to flush the head after each sail and have virtually no odor from the head. I'm told that in the Chesapeake Bay the micro-organisms that are in the water die and rot in the head producing the odor.
