Speedseal

Re: Speedseal
Clay, I purchased one two years ago but never installed it. I was going to get around to it, and wish I had, because I once needed to remove the standard cover quickly to investigate the impeller when I noticed the engine running hot and a lower rate of discharge. I anchored behind a spit of land in the middle of the Detroit River with a 4-knot current, and wouldn't you know it, three of the screws broke off and it turned into a huge project to repair it, and can't use the Speedseal on this pump anymore. At some point I'm going to get a new pump, install the Speedseal, and use the old for a spare. If I had had the Speedseal to begin with, I would've saved a lot of hassle. I think they're a great idea, especially in the kind of hairy situation I was in. Tim

I installed one on my MD7A and am very pleased. I think it was worth the investment.

Anyone had any experience with Speedseal? This is a cover for the water pump impeller housing that can be removed without tools...seems expensive but a neat idea. thanks.

Re: Speedseal - Good Idea
Hi Clay,
I installed one on the MD7A on 'Heather Ann' and would agree it was worth the investment. This is also on my 'to do' list for 'Evening Light'.
It really minimizes the 'little screw falling in the bilge' problem.

Re: Speedseal
I installed one on my Yanmar YSM-8. Even though you still need to unbolt the pump to get to the impeller (on a Yanmar), I still think it's worthwhile

Speedseal is one of those rare boat items that is actually better than it is advertised to be. I installed on on my CD27 13hp Westerbeke. Makes checking the impeller no chore at all. And, most importantly, you're not losing those little screws in the bilge! Buy it, you won't regret it.

Re: Speedseal
We put one on Parfait's Perkins 4-108. Works as advertised and gives peace of mind in that one small area of concern.

Look in the back of Cruising World or other sail magazines. They almost always have ads there....
