October 31-blew my MD7a engine on a trip to Stuart Island in the San Juans with 20 pounds of dry ice and two hundred pounds of books for the school library, and for the party-dance at Stuart Island School, a one room school on an island that is a 100 yards from the Canadian Border.
Got towed back to Anacortes, WA the next day (thank goodness I had insurance as the trip was a $800.00 bill)
Installed a new 2020 Volvo engine (made by Perkins with Catapiller parts with a Japanese block) only to find out that the new engines do not fit the CD 28's as they have the flywheel in the rear instead of the front. The end result? we had to modify the steps by moving them foward approximately 5 inches-and lots of bucks for installation!!
Yanmar? Same problem as they are built with a "bulge" in the rear of the engine!
End result? Keep the old Volvos running, however our new Volvo is a lot quieter and with no vibration!
Need further info? Will be happy to answer any questions!

What a nightmare! I'm a little confused. Which Yanmar were you looking at. I know that many CD27s have been repowered with Yanmar 2GM engines which are 18 HP (replacing the YSM series which were about 8HP). I know some small modification may have been necessary for the companionway steps (the entrance to the engine compartment on a CD27) for the 2GM but evidently the repowering was commonly done. Is the engine compartment on a CD28 that much different from the CD27 that Yanmar 2GM wouldn't fit? Or, perhaps you were looking for a larger Yanmar than the 2GM?

Sounds like a mess...glad to hear the new Volvo runs well...this is a real nice engine...Morris used the 2020 in some of his boats. I didn't think repowering a 27 or 28 with a Yanmar required any modifications, however, as somewhere along the line my 27 was repowered with a Yanmar 2GM (13hp,earlier version) and I don't believe there was much done other than a new bed. Good luck!

Re: New Engine for an older CD28
Ken you are exactly correct about the Yanmar 2GM 20F. I am in the midst of replacing the older single cylinder Yanmar in our CD27.
The "bulge" you refer to at the rear of the engine makes the replacement a fairly big job. The motor bed has to be completly new (higher), yet still line up with the shaft log.
The liner panels in front of the engine must be reworked for access.
Controls are completly different. Water muffler is 2" instead of 1.5" (much bigger, where to find space?) Hoses are bigger.
I have documented the job with photo's as I progress in case anyone else decides to go this route.
I have had the new 13" prop on order from Mich Wheel for over 5 weeks now waiting to make the final hook up!
When I purchased the engine from a shop which specializes in this type of work, I ask how long the took to do the project. They bill for 2 men for 5 days. I now believe it!

Re: New Engine for an older CD28
I just repowered a 79' CD 28 with a Yanmar 2GM20 (18 hp) and while there were some major modifications the end result was superb. The engine beds had to be built up 3-4 inches to line up the shaft. I'm not sure about the muffler problem aforementioned as my installer did not mention it. But the power and thrust is excellent with a 13 inch three blade prop. After my first 40 hours of engine use the diesel consumption rate was less than one quart per hour. The downfalls are engine access is pitiful, even checking the oil with a hidden dipstick is a chore. But performance makes up for it. Best of luck.Warren Kaplan wrote: Ken,

Re: New Engine for an older CD28
When do you know when it's time to replace the MD7A before it dies its final death? Our '78 28 has constant overheating problems even with a new water pump. I am concerned that the corrosion within may be the ultimate death of it, but for now it works. Not sure if I should be planning for a new engine or have faith for a few more years. Any sage advise?: :Ken,
