I have choked on the Volvo Penta in my 28' Cape Dory Power Boat. After $4,000.00 in repairs and parts I am told it needs to be completely rebuilt. The parts department is totally out of sight and I'm going to purchase an new engine? Does anyone have any suggestions? How about a Yanmar? Size?
Any help would be appreciated! Is anyone interested in some new parts?

The Yanmar 2GM is a very nice engine for your needs. I have re-powered my CD30 with a 3GM which is actually more hp than I need. I have seen several 2GM installations in the 30 CD'S replacing the older Volvos. The Yanmar is a pretty straightforward changeout for these boats. If you are handy enough to do the chore yourself the costs can reduced nicely. Try shopping the larger Yanmar dealers for the best price. One to consider is Mack Boring Co. They are in N.J. I believe. Another one is Mastry Engine Center in St. Petersburg,Fl. Yanmar has been giving these dealers a lot of restrictions as to what territory they sell in. I believe that you can purchase a new 2GM with gear for less than 5K. I priced Westerbeke also but could not beat the Yanmar deals. It is a matter of preference. The old Volvo has some value for parts to the right person if you can connect. Good luck .WILLIAM PERKS wrote: William

The Yanmar is a great replacement motor. Depending on the reduction gears (keep the same reduction and reuse the same prop. and shaft) you may need to change out the prop. and shaft. I think that you will also find better GPH of fuel use.
Good luck.

I hear you about the Volvo Pentas. Some years back I replaced both mechanical MS4 tranmissions on my 30 powerboat with HS1 hydraulics, rather than continue to replace cone clutches every few hundred hours.WILLIAM PERKS wrote: I have choked on the Volvo Penta in my 28' Cape Dory Power Boat. And the part prices are robbery. I wrote the president of Volvo Penta U.S. a letter about that once. They wrote back about how Volvo specifies only the highest quality, including their great VDO gauges. So when my VDO tachometers started failing, one by one, I wrote again and asked what they would do to stand behind their great quality. They never replied.
Let us know how you make out with the Yanmars.

Sorry to hear about the repair bills. My Volvo on my 1976 CD28 blew last month. After much discussion and deliberation, I bought a Yanmar 2GM20F from RPM Diesel in Ft. Lauderdale for about $5600. I dont thing that you will be able to do much better than that. Am planning on installing it next week. If you would like an update. let me know.WILLIAM PERKS wrote: I have choked on the Volvo Penta in my 28' Cape Dory Power Boat.
