Anyone know the length (including the chain section) of the Edson steering cable on a CD36? Need to replace mine.
Thanks, Bill

CD36: Steering Cable Length?

Re: CD36: Steering Cable Length?
I hate to answer you this way, but last year I replaced my Edson cable on CD36 hull no. 123 and to be certain I removed the old one before ordering the new one and measured it. There are so many changes that are made between model years that this is the only way to be sure about it. I ordered a standard one, then hacksawed the cable down to the right length because Edson wanted quite a bit more money to make a custom one. I kept the old one as a spare on board, since it still would get me to port in an emergency.

Re: CD36: Steering Cable Length?
Dennis,
Edson Steering Data Sheet for the Cape Dory 36 S-84-1036-1 shows the following:
1 Fig. 775 2S2B6 Chain & Wire Rope Assembly. Looking at their 1988 parts list gives us some clues, but the not the exact answer as they don't show the 2S2B6. It appears that all the assemblies with similar nomenclature (2S2)use 5/8 #50 chain of 2 feet in length and the 736S adapter. The last digit seems to be the length of the wire rope. For example, they list the 2S2B7 as using chain size: 5/8 #50, chain length: 2 feet, wire size: 3/16, wire length: 7 feet. Of course, having too much wire is not a problem if you can cut it. The link below will give you the current page. They seem to have converted to metric.
My guess is that a call to Edson will get you the exact info you need, but maybe not a price you like. In 1988 prices ranged from $130 to $176 for the assembly.
Be sure to have a helper to hand you the replacement tools and parts for those you drop into the bilge.
Keep on sailing.
