New York area marinas
We are readying our CD31 for a trip from Georgia to New York the end of May. Any suggestions on marinas and any other information you all can give.
Thanks, John

Where in NY are you heading? New York Harbor Upper Bay? Lower Bay? Upper Hudson? Long Island Sound? There are plenty of anchorages, marinas and yacht clubs in all areas. Tell us where you'll be and we can provide specifics.

Re: New York area marinas
I was a member for several years at Richmond County Yacht Club, RCYC, in Great Kills harbor on Staten Island. Check your chart and you will see it on the south shore of Staten Island, it's about a 2 hour run as you come around Sandy Hook, N.J. They have club moorings for a nominal fee and launch service from early morning til late at night. Call RCYC on 09 when you are about a mile away and request a mooring. It is easy to get into the city and go sight seeing. The night before, you can usually tie up in Manasquan at the Crab Shack for free if you have dinner there and there is also anchorage space on the inside of the railroad bridge. I've sailed from Tybee Island to N.Y. many times, be sure and stop in Belhaven, N.C. on the way, good anchorage or stay at the River Forest Marina, I used to Captain the Tow Boat U.S. there. Just looking for a place where we can stay for a couple of weeks & tour the city. Would like access to the subway system. I've looked at marinas.com, which I know is not a very complete list & most places request reservations.Catherine Monaghan wrote: Where in NY are you heading? New York Harbor Upper Bay? Lower Bay? Re: New York area marinas
Try Liberty State Marina or another one (cant recall name) further up the Hudson near the Jersey vent shaft for the Holland Tunnel.
Both of these marina's have access to light rail transportation (PATH/NJ Transit) and are just across the river from Manhattan.
I live on Staten Island. Great Kills is nice but it's a long express bus trip to Manhattan and longer by taxi, train (SIRT) and ferry.
There is a Hi-Speed ferry service convenient to many of the Jersey marinas situated along the south shore of Raritan bay. However it is expensive (very) and service is not particuraly frequent.

Re: New York area marinas
John,
Bring your wallet, the marinas in NY Harbor (Upper Bay) are expensive. Expect to pay from $1.50 to $2.00 per foot per night plus extra for electrical hookup. You'll find that most of the yacht clubs are much cheaper than the marinas. So if you're a yacht club member, you may want to take advantage of your reciprocal privileges.
The NJ marinas are probably the nicest facilities with the best views of the Manhattan skyline. And there's ferry service to/from NYC and Liberty Landing (marina and YC), Lincoln Harbor and Port Imperial. I'm not sure about Newport. Liberty Landing, both the marina and YC, are essentially at Liberty State Park where you'll also have somewhat easy access to the Statue of Liberty and the Liberty Science Center museum.

Port Imperial Marina -- Weehawken, NJ, phone: (201) 902.8787
On Manhattan there's:
Manhattan Yacht Club -- New York, NY, phone: (212) 786-3323
Surfside 3 Marina -- New York, NY, phone: (212) 336-7873
It should be noted that the Manhattan Yacht Club and the marina at North Cove are pretty much at "Ground Zero". I don't know how easy it would be to get around in NYC from there with all of the work going on in that area. So if you want to stay there, definitely call first for details.
Also in New Jersey, but on Raritan Bay (NY Harbor Lower Bay) are:
Atlantic Highlands Municipal Marina -- Atlantic Highlands, NJ, phone: (732) 291-1670
Atlantic Highlands Yacht Club -- Atlantic Highlands, NJ, phone: (732) 291-1118
Gateway Marina & Yacht Sales -- Highlands, NJ, phone: (732) 291-4440
There is also ferry service from the Highlands, NJ to NYC. If you want to venture deeper into Raritan Bay, there's also ferry service to Manhattan from South Amboy or Perth Amboy -- cannot remember which. It's starting new this year. I can get back to you regarding the other ferries.
And on Long Island, also on Raritan Bay, there's:
Miramar Yacht Club -- Brooklyn, NY, phone: (718) 646-9436
<a href="http://www.sailingsource.com/sbyc/defau ... Sheepshead Bay Yacht Club -- Brooklyn, NY, phone: (718) 891-0991
A cab will get you from Brooklyn to Manhattan.
City Island, NY is another possibility. It is very literally surrounded by marinas and yacht clubs. City Island is on the Long Island Sound side but you should be able to get a cab into the City from there. Or you can take a cab from whatever marina/YC you're at to the Botanical Gardens or Fordham and take the train from there to Grand Central. Or take a cab from marina/YC to Pelham Bay Park and jump on the subway from there.
If you don't have a cruising guide, get one. It'll have pretty much all the info you'll need.

I kept our boat at Lincoln Harbor Yacht Club for 6 months. Great location! Great facilities. I would stay there again if my boat is ever in NY.
