I need to inspect my transmission cable on my CD330. It appears to be sticky when trying to engage the Hurth transmission. At the pedestal, you can move the shift lever through its entire range and it does engage the transmission as expected. However, there is no "sensitivity" to the neutral position. You never know if you have the shift lever centered at neutral. When starting the engine a couple of times, the transmission was engaged enough to turn the propeller a bit.
I realize the Hurth transmission has a clutching mechanism and is operating nominally and it's probably the cable that needs servicing. Has anyone ever removed the cable from the pedestal? I'm just wondering if it can be freed from both ends and either removed from the housing or replaced entirely?

Re: Sticky transmission cable
Hi Ed,
I rebuilt my pedestal last summer, and had to remove the cables from the throttle & shifter. You can remove and replace it. The recommended (to me by my mechanic) replacement is Red Jacket control cables (West Marine). You will have to specify what you need however, as there exists no table of boat to cable product to refer to. Essentially, you measure the length and do a 1 for 1 replacement. The engine end is secured with a bracket that is bolted to piece of sheet metal on my Volvo..you have a Yanmar I think..right? I would expect them all to be variations on the same theme however. The outer cover is usually ordered to length, and that is the part that is locked down to the metalwork on the engine. The center wire is suspended inside the cable by a metal ferul at either end, and this is usually replaced with several extra feet for attaching to the engine and pedestal.
Have you tried to lube the wire and ferul? Use some dry lube or a drop of a 30w oil (not sure the best lube here, but I used a teflon spray and it seems to work ok on the shifter and not so ok on the throttle..more to come this spring).

Re: Sticky transmission cable
Ed,
Does your CD330 have Edson pedestal steering?
If so, there should be a "throttle friction adjustment screw" inside the housing. Do you have an Edson catalog? The catalog describes the parts and there are drawings too -- very helpful. If you don't have a catalog, go to:
<a href="http://www.edsonmarine.com/catalog/cato ... der.cfm</a>
and order the "Sailboat Catalog".
Hope this helps.
