Electric anchor windlass

Post by Brian »

Hi Folks,

Looking for recommendations on an electric anchor windlass suitable for a Cape Dory 28. I've heard about some that are prone to breakdowns and would like a recommendation for a unit that has been trouble free.

We're heading to the Bahamas this year from the Great Lakes and the old guy with a heart condition and the tiny lady need something to pull up the anchor full of weeds or mud.

Reply to me directly if you don't want to bad mouth a unit on this list.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Brian,
I installed a Simpson-Lawrence 900GD this past summer on my CD30MKII. I'm very pleased with it at this point in time. I installed two foot switches on the fore deck. I have the capability of operating the windlass from the cockpit as well. A definite advantage when leaving a crowded anchorage singlehanded or under harsh conditions. The 900 might be a little overkill for your boat. I would recommend you check out the next size smaller. The "GD" indicates "gypsy and drum" It will work with either rope or chain. I'm not familiar with other manufacturers, but I would recommend the S/L.
Good Luck!

My CD 28 came with a Maxwell 500 on the pointy end of the boat-and it is the best thing since sliced bread-and right after my Autohelm!!

If you do install one, stay away from the foot switches as they will leak and cause havoc on the deck structure. Spend the money and get one that you can plug into a socket in the front. Also, install a separate switch in the cockpit in case you single-hand.

Also, and most important, install an on-off switch somewhere out of reach of kids (and adults who should know better)
