The service information sheet for the Barlow winches says to use "paraffin" to clean the parts. The West Marine catalog suggests using "kerosene, stoddard solvent or a safe degreaser". what kind of paraffin would be used as a cleaner? Any other comments or suggestions?

Winches - cleaning Barlow parts

Re: Winches - cleaning Barlow parts
Kerosene is an excellent winch cleaner. It leaves a nice protective petroleum film on the parts after cleaning which protects them in places where they aren't greased.Bill Brockschmidt wrote: The service information sheet for the Barlow winches says to use "paraffin" to clean the parts. It's a problem of translation..from English to english. "Paraffin" is the English name for kerosene. It's use is recommended, and as John says, leaves a nice protective film on the metal work.

Bill,
I too got hung up on the meaning of "paraffin" last summer. Kerosene works great....however what does one do with the dirty fuel after you use it? Where do you dispose of it?
