I recently purchased a Raytheon SL72 radar. I would like to mount the display on the pedestal. Should I have concerns about interference with the compass which is also on the pedestal? Hopefully the dome will be mounted on a Questus backstay mount.
Thanks to any and all who might be knowledable on this subject!!!

Radar-Compass interference???

Re: Radar-Compass interference???
There is normally a safe distance to / from the compass given on marine electronics devices, either on the label or in the manual. Otherwise, try powering up the system with the scanner attached and locate the display head where you intend to mount it while monitoring any change in compass reading on a few headings. If it is an LCD display you probably have less of a problem than you would with the traditional CRT type of display.

Re: Radar-Compass interference???
I have a Furuno with an LCD display so the units are similar. My installation manual suggests: "The compass safe distance of 0.65 meters (standard compass) and 0.5 meters (steering compass) should be observed to prevent deviation of the magnetic compass." I think you will find some professional advice on rec.boats.etectronics.Richard Fefferf wrote: I recently purchased a Raytheon SL72 radar. I would like to

I have been using a Questus mount for about 2 years. A top drawer item, but the economics are less than amusing.Richard Fefferf wrote: Hopefully the dome will be mounted on a Questus backstay mount.

Re: Radar-Compass interference???
Richard: I installed the raytheon RL72RC radar/chart plotter just forward of icebox on my cd 30, swivel mount. Also the RL70 repeater on pedastal (starboard side). LCD display and compass are within one foot of each other, there has been no interference at all. The fluxgate compass for auto, the ritchie at wheel, secondary at nav station and hand held are all within 1 degree of each other. It hasen't been a problem. Radome is mast mounted on gimbaled mount. You will find the screen at the wheel extemely helpful, easy to read, handy at night or caught in dense fog I'am really glad I decided on pedastal mount for the repeater. Good luck, Ben

You did not mention if you were getting the LCD or CRT display. The LCD displays are generally better for the binnacle mount. We mounted a Raytheon RL-72 LCD display at the binnacle with no detectable effect on the compass.
There have been previous discussions on this board about the relative merits of mast vs. pole vs. backstay mounts. for what it's worth, we went with a fixed mount on the mast, mostly because of aesthetics and the fact that Robinhood had done many more of these mounts than any other.
