VOR- of general sailing interest-

Post by Don Carr »

FWIW: I've seen the video taken from Assa Abloy..it is quite spectacular. Almost as good as Larry De Mers 100ft Pacific Monsters.

On Sunday, January 27 at 3:30pm ET (12:30 PT) ESPN2 presents
Leg 3 of the Volvo Ocean Race. This 30-minute program
features the Sydney Hobart Race as the first stage of this
leg to Auckland, New Zealand. Gary Jobson is aboard Illbruck
for the start with American skipper John Kostecki. About
two hours after getting off the boat 30 miles down the
racecourse, the fleet ran into a tornado. Four boats captured
this giant waterspout on video. You won’t want to miss
these amazing pictures. How would you and your crew react?
American Chris Larson joins the crew of Assa Abloy. After
a very slow start in Sydney they had quite a fast finish
winning the leg.

Leg 4 starts on January 27 from Auckland
to Rio de Janeiro (January 26 in the USA) You can follow
the race at www.volvooceanrace.org.

This has alrady been run on cable at least once. I saw it three weeks ago infact..at least it was a clip that included the tornado coming on and striking the boats. It was a fairly well formed tornado for over water..a good base diameter rather than the thin rope-types that are normally seen over water. They showed the damages it caused to the boats afterward. Several were without masts and torn sails everywhere. Several boats retreated to safety for repairs. That is about all that I remember from the piece, as I caught it while working, so was distracted.
