CD Burgee etiquette???

Post by Richard Feffer »

What is proper flag etiquette when flying the CD Burgee and a State Flag from the same spreader? Or should they be flown from opposite sides of the vessel?

Let not "Stumpy" reply since it be known that he will fly anything if it be to his advantage!

Captain Feffer,

Burgee deffinately from the Starboard spreader with the code signal flag "1" directly below if it applies and has actually been fathomed at sea! (You, will have your chance this summer next!) State flag, ya got me, but I would think it should be flown immediately below the ensign. Should it be mastheaded? Maybe someone that knows will answer? I remain.........flying maggies' drawers and maybe some of her top hamper, if that will do it! ! ....your most HUMBLE servant.........

To be painfully correct, the burgee must flown from the masthead [see:pigstick] and the state flag from the starboard spreader.

Best wishes,

I have eyewitnessed the 'painfully' part of this exercise starring Mr. Bober. A wonder to behold.

Vexillogically speaking, if the CDSOA burgee is your primary sailing
organization, you should fly it at the masthead, on a pigstick. If
that is not possible, you can fly it from the starboard spreader. I
would think that the State flag would be treated much the same as
other organization flags (ie; USPS) or as Club officer flags, such
as Commodore, Vice Commodore, Treasurer, etc.,and be flown from
the starboard spreader beneath and on the same halyard as the club
burgee. If you have a yawl or a ketch, then you have more options,
like rigging another flag halyard on your mizzen. Chapmans (any
edition) has an excellent chapter on flag etiquette.
