sailmaker recommendation

Post by Robert »

I want to get new sails for my CD28, but there are no local sailmakers in my area (Port Isabel, TX) so I must go the mail-order or internet-order route. I would appreciate any suggestions or recommendations for choosing a sailmaker that you folks might have. Thanks.

Robert, If you ever get to the Austin, Texas area I would recommend checking out Bartlett Sails on Lake Travis. I tried to buy a new main sail for my CD25 from him but he wouldn't sell me one! I was having some problems with my sails and since they were over 25 years old I decided to get a new main sail made. I talked to John Bartlett about what was happening with my sail and he told me to bring it by the loft so he could take a look at it. I figured he was just going to use the old sail as a pattern or something so I dropped the sail off. I called him a few days later and he told me what was wrong with the sail and how to fix it. He said it had at least two good seasons left in it. When I went to pick up the sail he took the time to roll it out and show me exactly what needed to be done to fix the tired old sail. So not only would he not sell me a new sail, he also would not take any money for his services! In addition, he gave me a partial roll of sail repair tape to fix a few tears. Like I said, I have never bought a sail from him but, as I have heard from several sailors, he is a master sail maker and a very honest person.

Robert,

I just had a new full batten main and 135% reefing jib made for my CD 28 by Super Sail Makers in Ft. Lauderdale. I am very happy with the sails, service and not a bad price. They have a web site, I believe is www.sail-depot.com.

Good luck!

I had a new main for my CD28 made by a sail loft in Kingston, Ontario. The attention to detail was what I enjoyed about their work. The finished product outperformed my expectations. The advantage of the $US over the $Canadian helped cut the cost in half of what it would cost in US sail lofts.

Give Kingston Sail Loft a call when you've got a few quotes from other sailmakers. 613-531-8909. Ask for Andy Soper ot John Clark (a world champion Shark sailor).
