CD28 repower?

CD28 repower?
I have a 1976 CD 28 with a Volvo Penta MD2b raw water engine in Ft. Lauderdale. Enjoyed a day of sailing yesterday. Unfortunately on the way back the old engine suddenly started popping very loudly so I shut it down immediately. I suspect that it ate an intake valve, but have not confirmed it yet. We are thinking that it is time to consider repowering her. The Yanmar 20hp looks to be the candidate. However, that would leave us with 5hp less than we had before.
I am wondering if anybody has had any experience with the Yanmar 20hp on this boat and if it was adequate? I just put new sails and canvas on her, so selling is not really an option! Not sure if a 30hp yanmar will fit. I have always had good experience with Yanmar.
Would really appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

Re: CD28 repower?
13 HP does just fine on LIQUIDITY. I've motored in company with CD28's with more... they don't go any faster; they just squat more trying to.

In my humble opinion, 30HP is way more than you need or can even use...if you even need 25, something else must be wrong like wrong prop etc...as Neil says, 13HP should be adequate...it pushes my CD 27 plenty fast enough....with a 28 and the extra 1,500 lbs, you might benefit from the Yanmar 2GM 18 or 20hp...shouldn't need anymore....

There is a rule of thumb that surveyors, boat builders etc, use for determining the size of an engine. It is " 2 HP for every 1000 pounds of displacement". The CD28 displaces 9000 pounds so 18-20 hp should be fine. There are other variables of course and that's why some do quite well with a 13 hp engine. But if you are going to repower anyway, and you can afford it, consider the rule of thumb.

Re: CD28 repower?
Tim, I have a 1977 CD 28 with the Yanmar 20 in it. It would be a great choice. I have never run my motor over 2500 rpms. When I go over 2500 rpms all the boat does is squat in the water. You gain no speed. I have cruised the Erie Canal and the Hudson river all mostly on power and the motor has performed flawlessly even when motoring against strong currents. I think it would be the motor of choice.

Thanks for all the help guys. It sounds like 20hp is the way to go.Tim Akers wrote: I have a 1976 CD 28 with a Volvo Penta MD2b raw water engine in Ft. Lauderdale. Enjoyed a day of sailing yesterday. Re: CD28 repower?
I have a Universal Medalist M-18, which is 14hp. It pushes my 28 6 knots at 2500rpm. The maximum rpm is 3200, but i don't need it.
Re: CD28 repower?
Tim:
My 79' CD 28 just hit the water three weeks ago with a new Yanmar 2 GM 20 (18 hp) and I'm very pleased. It cruises at six knots at about 2200 rpm, has good power in reverse with a 13/12 three-blade prop and seems very stingy on diesel after 17 hours the guage has barely moved off full. The engine beds had to be modified, built up about three inches in order for the drive shaft to line up properly. I spent $5,600 on the engine and about another $2k on installation. It seems to be the perfect choice so far. Good luck.

Re: CD28 repower?
The difference in weight between my old engine and the one I am considering, I can tell you is 100%! The book says the Volvo MD2b wieghs 495lbs. I will confirm tommarrow after I lift it out...by myself of course. The Yanmar 2GM20 wieghs in at 245lbs. Of course its a little harder to hand crank without that big flywheel and those compression release levers. Then again, thats what the starter is for.Neil Gordon wrote: >>I have a Universal Medalist M-18, which is 14hp.<<
