I am interested in purchasing a CD to replace my 1972 Ericson 32'. My wife and I have always admired the workmanship and classic lines of the CD. We am now sailing with a small child and are concerned about safety, reliability and comfort. We sail on most weekends in the New York area and take an annual 10 - 15 day trip along the USEC.
Any suggestions as to which CD would best suit our needs?
Any sellers?

This is one of those questions to which it is difficult to respond. You're asking us to tell you which boat would suit your personal needs. We'd have to know a lot more about you to even guess. However, in terms of safety as a very loose general rule bigger boats are safer. (Not to say that a CD 33 is unsafe.) Bigger boats are also more physically and financially draining. Bigger sails, bigger anchors, bigger property taxes, bigger insurance premiums, bigger slip fees, bigger cans of varnish and paint, bigger amounts of time to maintain. etc. If your bank account is unlimited, your wife is an olympic weight lifter etc. by all means get the CD 36. You'd never have to get another boat and could sail it around the world if the mood struck you. I own a CD 31 because it's tough for me to handle those big sails when singlehanding, I don't have an unlimited budget etc. Everything in boating is a compromise and you have to make the ones that suit you and your situation. You know yourself and your situation better than any of us out here could possibly know. I don't think you can go wrong on any of these boats, You just have to decide which one suits you and then enjoy. I have a 1981 CD36 which I mostly singlehand, including a trip from Bar Harbor to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia last fall. I worried before I bought the boat that 36 feet would be too big to handle, but with a little forethought this has not proven to be the case. I plan to leav e next Spring on an extended open ended cruise. I've been very happy with the boat, including a lot of local coastal cruising around Buzzards Bay. The extra room is great when bringing company.

I am the owner of "Sea Scape" a 1981 CD36. I single hand her all over the east coast from Maine to the Bahamas. It's an ideal boat for single or short handing. Yes it costs a little more to berth a 36 footer but the additional storage and living space aboard is well worth the added cost. By the way, the rig in the CD36 is identical to the CD33 & CD330 so there is no advantage to smaller sails. One of the major advantages for cruising is the use of a Perkins 4-108 engine instead of the smaller engines used in the 33 footers.
