The "Rules"
All Captains Commanding,
Just so we don't work to far to weather on this, if you look at the CDSOA Site at the top of this page, and click on Events, that will take you to the "Race Results" part of the Randevous 2001 story. In it, John Martin talks about the Sailing Instructions ("Rules")for that historic first CD Race.
To quote John: "Basically the Sailing Instructions included: this is an informal race, there will be no protest hearings, we will use a pursuit start, the base time is established at 0945 and all watches should be synchronized by GPS." Other than the course to follow, that was IT as far as rules go!
I believe John did an excellent job conducting that first ever race, it was fun, and it wasn't a lot of trouble. Skippers could do basically anything they wanted(except sink the competition!)and it didn't take a lot of thought and calculation.
Sounds like a plan to me, let's do the same thing next year, except, maybe a different course! And, maybe a few more ardent and dedicated(read that:"Out to get Me!!!") competitors!
Respectively submitted,......your most HUMBLE Servant.....

Re: The "Rules"
"Out to get Me" and "do basically anything they wanted(except sink the competition!)". Hmmm. Sounds like too much latitude (not degrees) there, but, hey, rules are rules. Dont the rest of ya love not being #1. Hee, Hee, Hee.
Re: The "Rules"
I've been enjoying your discussions (banter). It reminds me of some racing we used to do on Pueblo Reservoir in Colorado. There were no handicap ratings (all boats rated equally). An undisclosed number (before the start) of slower boats were issued Nerf footballs. These had small holes torn in the skin, to allow water entry (improves range). Regardless of your position in the fleet, or right of way, if you or any portion of your boat was struck by the football, you had to use it on someone else. Of course, if it hit you in the back of the sails, or transom, or whatever, you were obligated to turn around and retrieve it. It was within the rules to hide the ball, sail up to someone claiming you didn't have it, and NAIL 'EM! If you got too far ahead of the fleet, the committee boat could "deliver" a football from a slower boat (they always bounced it off the back of the genny). You could not cross the finish line in 1st place if a football was aboard.
I don't think anyone ever won a race......in fact....I don't think we ever finished one! Use caution with this form of racing. I knocked myself out with the boom of my Santana 20, doing a sneak 720 degree turn (pretending I didn't have the ball, to nail a boat coming up at faster speed). I remember the loud bonk, and not much afterwards!

Re: The "Rules"
This is not "Banter". This is the psychological part of "The Race". The Nerf footballs is interesting. May should try them (soaked, of course) in the parking lot at the Fleet meeting. Its winter time, you know. This sounds like the Nissian Pathfinder commercial where they are playing polo in the Pathfinders.
Hey Jim, any crunches occur during your "Race"???

Re: Waterballon wars
Gee Michael! The Cape Dory Race is only one year old and already we are getting suggestions to disregard rules and ratings. Sounds like you're trying to make the Cape Dory Race degenerate into the America's Cup Race where these, ahem, "Sportsman" have been trying to disregard rules and get around ratings for years. Remember the catamaran Dennis Connor sailed a few years back. Come on Mike! We at least have to have some rules and ratings on size and deployment of water balloons!Michael Heintz wrote: Rules....who need rules? Rating....who needs ratings?

Ahoy, Captain Heintz
What about dyed water in the water balloons??? Assign each boat a color, and award points for the number of hits on another ship. I can see this degrading into something that JimL posted about soaked Nerf footballs. Naval paint ball battles.
Yes....my boat and a Ty...
I tried to post answer earlier....must have fouled it up. Anyway, after the problem, my young crew took over for a bit and hoisted the chute while running dead behind a Typhoon. The subsequent damage was paid by me (we really nailed his transom, with my Santana 20). He also had a hidden nerfball, so we got double tagged.
The extra range of the water soaked ball tends to keep a little distance among participants.....probably works about right. We were younger and foolish, however....so everything in perspective, gentlemen.
