PHRF rating on CDSOA membership form
I am filling out my CDSOA membership form. One of the things it says I need to put on the form is the PHRF rating. Can anyone tell me what this stands for and what is the rating for the CD25. I know it has something to do with racing hadicaps and I have seen them mentioned before, I just never payed any attention till now.

Re: PHRF rating on CDSOA membership form
Will,
Welcome aboard! The CDSOA is a great organization. Now to the PHRF question. It has been awhile since I raced under PHRF but as I recall. PHRF stands for Performance Handicape Racing Formula.
The rating is expressed is seconds per mile that your boat will be given above and beyond a base line standard. Something like a golf handicap relative to par.
By subtracting 1 boats PHRF rating from another the result is the number of seconds per mile that 1 boat would give or get from another boat. This number multiplied by the length of the race course gives the total amount of time that 1 boat would give or get.
For example: if boat A has a PHRF rating of 200 and boat B has a rating of 140 then boat A would receive a handicapp of 1 minute per mile. In a 10 mile race if boat A were to finish within 10 minutes of boat B then boat A would win the race.
A boats base handicap can be modified by the local fleet if race results indicate that a change is in order. Also, the boats base handicap is predicated on certain standards; i.e. genoa size, lenght of spinaker pole relative to the "J" dimension, etc. If your boat exceeds any of these standards then your rating would be lowered.
This board has a listing of PHRF ratings for various model Cape Dorys.
With all of that said watch out for a certain Captain Stump (Stumpy to some) who will do what ever is necessary (lie, cheat, steal, withhold information, provide bad information, etc)in order to gain an unfair racing advatage.
Once again welcome aboard.

Re: PHRF rating on CDSOA web site.....
Captain Wheatley,
PHRF is an acronym for Performance Handicap Racing Fleet, and the PHRF rating for a CD-25 is 261. Check the website for "About Cape Dorys, there is a wealth of information there about PHRF and all the ratings for all Cape Dories EXCEPT for a notorious Cape Dory 32! !
Dave Stump
Captain commanding
s/v Hanalei CD-30C
PHRF 207
P.S. An example: Difference between CD-30C and CD-25 PHRF is 261 - 207 = 54! In other words, Hanalei would give you 54 seconds per mile of the race! If it were a 12 mile race, and Hanalei crossed the line 10 minutes ahead of you, YOU would WIN the race by 48 seconds! ! (This will NOT happen next year at sea! !)

No rating for infamous MK II Racing Sloops

Of course Pirate is wrong again, a slap in the face to us MK II Captains. I don't know how "notorious" these 32's are and do note that there is no rating for them. BUT ALSO notice no rating for the Racing Sloops CD 30 MK II. Aside from a bogus rating assigned for last year's race, thereby allowing Pirate Stump to win,....I do not see an official rating on the Cape Dory Board.
Pirate Stump continues his campaign of mis information, so desperate is he to hang onto his CDSOA # 1 title.

Re: No rating for infamous MK II Racing Sloops
I think a CD MKII owner should apply for a PHRF certificate from a local club before next year's race so a rating could be entered on this site & everyone would know. By the way, my CD31 has a rating of 207 from the PHRF committee on Lake Lanier, Ga. and there are 2 of us on the lake now with 31's. We had our first match race last Sunday, but the Martin's are waiting for their new 135% genoa so it should be a fun winter. PS, we're looking for crew.Michael Heintz wrote: Pirate Captain Stump (Stumpy to some ),

Re: Either that or...............
Captain Doyle,
Maybe by DEFAULT, the fleet could just assign a make-believe PHRF for the Mark IIs that causes each of them to give all of us 30 minutes PER MILE! ! ! Now THERE'S an idea!

Re: PHRF rating - Late Entry
Will...sorry for the late entry, but just a note to you. The PHRF rating may change from what is on the board based on where you race. My CD 25 was rated at 255 here in North Carolina by the NC PHRF committee based on years of performance. NC PHRF is under the SAYRA, South Atlantic Yacht Racing Association, under US Sailing. So depending on where you are, it may be different. My 1982 CD30, MADNESS III, is rated at 204 by NC PHRF. Oh yeah, my old CD25-MADNESS II, now called C-Breeze III, won the Cape Fear Yacht Club Summer Series for cruising class this year....CD25's ROCK!!!!!

Re: PHRF rating - Even Later Entry
Yes, CD25's can kick some butt if sailed to the rating. My rating certificate for Naragansett Bay is 264 and I have (occasionally) beaten J24's. Don't forget..A slow boat sailed to ratings is far preferable than a fast boat sailed poorly.

Thanks
Thank you all for the info on the PHRF rating. I must have been pretty tired when I first looked on the web site and didn't see anything about them. One thing I did not need to be told was how CD25s kick butt! I have not raced anyone but the wind, but when Suzi Q is riding a nice steady wind, she really does give you the spirit of speed even if it is just shy of 6 knots. Thanks Again!
