All CD'ers,

Seeing that the interest in next years CD Race is growing, we're going to flush out a 'CD Race 2002 Committee'. And, as such, we're looking for a ‘few good CD'ers’ :-)

Everyone with a background in sail racing, interest in sail racing or an interest in racing Cape Dories (now that's a unique expression) and a desire to contribute a little to the Race Committee/summer festivities, please e-mail or telephone the NE Fleet Captain.

More discussion and a Race Committee meeting will follow at the NE Fleet winter meeting in January. In order to allow maximum participation, the 'plan' is to have the course all thought out and posted long before the race.

This is getting interesting...!!! Presently I own the CD-33 Bandolera, hull #73 in Miami, Fl. I used to race J-24's (foredeck crew) and miss the fun of racing. Am still good with the spinny and would enjoy crewing on any of the boats of the racing CD fleet. I will travel whenever the time comes. Count me in for the upcoming 2002 race.

Pirate Stump will need help, 3 CD 30 MK II's in race

Methinks you should contact Pirate Captain Stump, ( some refer to him as Stumpy) As he is desperate to hold onto the title CDOSA # 1.

He will need all the help he can get in the 2002 CD Cup Challenge.

I hear from good sources, that there will now be three CD 30 MK II Racing Sloops in the race.

The predicted order of finishes: Macht Nichts, Layla, and Adamarie

Captain Heintz, you know there are other boats in this race. How are you so casually forgetting them??? Captain's Kaplan, Goldsmith and York (are you going to be there???) might form a deadly trio of 27's that others will have to deal with. Something to think about over your evening grog.

At this very moment I am scouring the nautical book shelves for books on sailboat racing rules and tactics (legal and perhaps,ahem, illegal as it pertains to our reigning champion). I'm also contemplating other "measures" over this preparatory winter and spring to make the CD27 a formidable opponent. But, I like to hold my cards close to the vest, so you'll all have to lose sleep nights thinking about it.

Captain Kaplan,

Just remember, if you are being pursued from the weather side, you may "head up" as long as the pursuer has not passed mast abeam of you! DON'T ever let another vessel come up on your weather side, when he gets close, his sails will take all the wind out of your sails and THAT will stop you dead in the water! This in fact did happen in the race last year, and it was a sight to see: the expression on the pursued Captains' face as his boat slowed almost to a stop. The Mate on Hanalei cried out that this activity was unfair, but it is really not, that's why they call it racing!

OK, now I've done it, given away some really good tactics and suggested a method to avoid it, but you REALLY already knew that didn't you?

Hmm,
When I lived in San Diego back in the 1970s Dennis Connor was a local hero..constantly flying up and down San Diego Bay testing out new America's Cup Contenders. Connor aboard Hanelei would give me concerns. But even back in the 1970s, Ted Hood and Lowell North were, shall we say, "a little long in the tooth". I not sure they're even still alive! But you can still have 'um if you want. I'm sure either of them can still "nip along smartly" on the foredeck if you need to change sails and I'm sure that when it gets to cranking winches during a tacking duel, you won't have to break out the Geritol and oxygen too many times before you round the windward mark. Then again, maybe Hanalei needs a little extra ballast to compensate for all the hot air that's coming from the cockpit.

Really? Did the rules change since I stopped racing? I thought the windward boat must maintain a proper course to the mark, or higher, but it could not come down on the leeward boat to block it. I think the leeward boat can luff the windward boat as high as "head to wind." Going further than "head to wind" would involve tacking without room and that would be a violation of another rule and risk being speared, but that would violate another rule.....

Someone who has read a current rule book needs to help me here.

This prediction was arrived at during CD 30 MK II's Captains meeting, after many cups of Grog!!!!!

Indeed the 27 does pose a threat. A deadly trio no less!!!!!!

I will modify the prediction...... the trio of MK's over the line first, second and third, followed by the trio of 27's.

Racing Rules of Sailing for 2001-2004

Excerpts from the International Sailing Federation Racing Rules of Sailing for 2001-2004 (see link below for complete rules):

Section A - Right of Way

10 ON OPPOSITE TACKS

When boats are on opposite tacks,
a port-tack boat shall keep clear
of a starboard-tack boat.

11 ON THE SAME TACK, OVERLAPPED

When boats are on the same tack and
overlapped, a windward boat shall
keep clear of a leeward boat.

12 ON THE SAME TACK, NOT OVERLAPPED

When boats are on the same tack and
not overlapped, a boat clear astern
shall keep clear of a boat clear ahead.

13 WHILE TACKING

After a boat passes head to wind,
she shall keep clear of other boats
until she is on a close-hauled course.
During that time rules 10, 11 and 12
do not apply. If two boats are subject
to this rule at the same time, the one
on the other's port side shall keep
clear.

17 ON THE SAME TACK; PROPER COURSE

17.1 If a boat clear astern becomes
overlapped within two of her hull
lengths to leeward of a boat on
the same tack, she shall not sail
above her proper course while they
remain overlapped within that

This rule has not changed.. The overlap and proper course rule applies. Except luffing rules are different on a start.
