Typhoon Rudder Separation

Typhoon Rudder Separation
Last weekend I worked on the rudder of a Typhoon for owner Dan Moore. The fiberglass rudder had started to separate from the rudder post at the top. Dan feared that the process wound continue down the rudder and the whole thing would come lose. Within an hour we had worked out a system using a thin piece of flat stock, two copper rivets and four countersunk washers. Everything went well, the rudder is now tight against the rudder post and Dan can use his boat with confidence.
Dan tells me that he has heard of the same problem with other Typhoons. On inspection of his rudder we found that the upper drift pin from the rudder post into the fiberglass rudder was lose in the glass. It was still well attached to the Bronze post. The solution that we developed worked well, took about one hour and could even be done on the boat with the help of a friend.
If any other Typhoon onwers are experiencing the same problem please contact me. I have all the materials on hand and can talk anyone through the procedure in a few minutes.

Re: Bristol Bronze
Dear Mike:
That is why they make polish and why most new boats avoid anything other than plastic and stainless steel.
Dear Roger:
Thanks for your input.

Re: Bristol Bronze
Wonderful! Give it a bit more time and you will enjoy the full beauty of bronze. Coincidently, earlier today I saw a beautiful set of lawn or patio chairs with the rich green patina of aged bronze. They were absolutely beautiful. There were too many other people around so I didn't flip one over to see who had cast them. I am sure that I couldn't afford anything like that anyway.Mike Wainfeld wrote: Dear Roger-I purchased for my Typhoon a pretty bronze plate-It was nice and shinny and golden while on my desk, but shortly after placing it onboard it turned greenish brown!!!??!

Thanks for your kind words. I am glad that you liked your Builder's Plate. I will be happy to do any thing that I can to help a group of dedicated owners like the Cape Dory folks.

Re: Typhoon Rudder Separation
Since Roger (Bristol Bronze) has invoked my name, I'll take this opportunity to tell you all what true craftsman he is. The care, skill and knowledge which he brought to my rudder issue was truly a gift. I encourage anyone in the southern New England area to pay him a visit if you're in the region. His shop is filled with unbelievably beautiful vintage and new bronze fittings of all description (along with an also unbelievable tangle of cords, tools, bits of this and that, and a lot of stuff I want but don't need!). And if he hasn't got what you need, just give him time...
Thanks, Roger!
