Davis Megalight - something nice to say

Post by Bob Loewenstein »

Ok, this isn't Cape Dory related, but I just had such a nice experience with a Davis (sellers of the Megalight, low power anchor light) that I had to share it.

I've had the light for a couple of years. Uses about 74 mA from the house battery. Has a light sensor that turns it on at dusk and off at dawn.

In the middle of our last cruise it didn't turn on. Examining it, I determined either the transistor or the light detector was bad. Luckily I had some aluminum tape and was able to use that to carry the voltage to the lamp and bypass the simple circuit.

Rather than going to Radio Shack for the parts, I called Davis. The person I talked to said they didn't have the spare components and didn't repair these items. But what they would do would send me a new Megalight! Not used to such an immediate and unsolicited offer, I said I didn't expect that and all I wanted was the parts because I'm pretty handy with electronics. Nope, he said, it's all taken care of...it'll ship today.

Even though a Megalight doesn't cost megabucks, if only the rest of life were so simple....

Nice to hear that because........

........I mounted one at the masthead. It came with a stainless bracketthat was predrilled to accept the light and the Davis Windex indicator too.....nice touch because now the indicator is illuminated at night !!!

One thing, the wire was rather light gague so I protected the exposed section from the sun with shielding (heat shrink tubing and some riggers tape).

Shhh! Don't Tell Them! They'll want to Buy My Slip!

Cap'n John,

We really need to keep this Carolina sailing thing quiet. If they all find out how great it is, I'll have competition for my slip.
