What is the difference between a fractional and masthead rig

A masthead rig has the headstay attach to the "truck" at the top of the mast or masthead. This will create a larger foretriangle which will accomodate a larger jib.

A fractional rig has the headstay attach to a point on the mast below the masthead. Many attach 7/8ths of the way up the mast. Thus a fractional rig. This creates a smaller jib and larger main sail. this usually uses an adjustable backstay so that headstay tension and main sail shape can be adjusted using backstay tension and bending the mast.

When sailed well both work well and are a matter of personal preferrence. The masthead rig is more popular and usually slightly faster, at least PHRF ratings seem to think so.
