CD25D Interior Fiberglass Bulkhead Color

I have tried several cleaners unsuccessfully to clean the interior bulkheads of my 1982 CD25D. They are discolored and stained (mostly water stains from the brass portals). As anyone had success with any cleaners or must I paint. I would rather use a satsifactory cleaner. Also, are the interior bulkheads gelcoated????? Does anyone know the color of the bulkheads????

On my 25D #95 the bulkheads are either teak or fiberglas.

Use Bon Ami on the fiberglas clean the gelcoat without abrading it too much.

I couldn't tell you if your bulkheads have gelcoat or not but a product I have used with great success on gelcoat with difficult stains is Brasso. The label says it can be use to remove scratches from watch lenses so I tried it on some serious stains on our 18 year old boat and what a surprise. Ended up doing the whole hull. The previous owner of our current boat had a full cover made and let the boat set for years on a trailer in the elements. The hull was different shades of white inside and outside the cover with terrible stains all over. When I finished the Brasso treatment the color had evened out, the stains were gone and the hull now looks like it just popped out of the mold. This product has a much finer abarasive than cleansers or polishing compounds. Took a couple days to do the hull but with normal upkeep I should never have to do it again. If it doesen't work for your application you are only out a couple bucks and it can always be used on the portals. I have never tried it on a painted surface.

The fiberglass overhead on our CD32 was also discolored (kinda yellow) and there were blotches in spots (kinda ugly), especially near the ports. I finally used liquid ZUD (concentrated oxalic acid) and it worked. If you decide to use it, make sure you wear eye protection, if this stuff drips in your eye while your cleaning the overhead, you won't be a happy camper! I used the sponges that have the Scotchbrite on one side and scrubbed with the Scotchbrite to remove the really stubburn stains. You pretty much wipe this stuff on, wait several minutes, then wipe it off (scrubbing, if needed, during the wipe off process).

FWIW, I too used Zud (powder & liquid) to no avail! I cant really tell what these stains are, but they are not in the area of the ports. They have a dusty brown look to them. I have thought about using Acetone on them (in a discrete location to test the process) but am concerned that it would remove the paint as well as the stain.

Anyway, if anyone finds something please post the results here.

If all else fails you might try using bleach. Worked well in my Typhoon.

Gee, I wonder what those stains are that ZUD couldn't remove them? If ZUD didn't work, how about <a href="http://www.youcansave.com/zapprofresan.html">ZAP</a>? ZAP's another heavy duty cleaner. It's supposed to remove just about anything from a variety of different surfaces, including fiberglass. Anyway, I've never used it, so I cannot attest to their product claims.

My surveyor was under the impression that the discolored areas on the liner were factory touch up spots which have aged to a different color than the fiberglass. He gave no recomendation for removal short of painting
