DeMers and deck crack filler

Post by Bob Loewenstein »

Larry, I seem to remember you trying some gelcoat crack filler (Captain Tollys creeping crack cure). Can you let us know how it turned out?

Bob

Sure thing..I don't know how it turned out! I can say that I have seen no evidence of additional problems in the cracks I did prepare and seal up with the Captain Tolly's Creeping Crack Cure. It is like water, in that it's viscosity is very low, so it will wick into small fizures and crazes, if they are clean and dry.
In order to know how it went, I would need a control crack allowed to run without protection, then to see if it leaked a year later. This I am not willing to do (jeesh, persnickety guy!)..so I have to say that it went well enough that I am thinking of doing every crack I can find with Captn. Tolly's preparation. But I do not know precisely if it is working as planned, nor how well, as the product is clear, and there is darn little of it in the crack.

I would say to try it, and test an area like I did.

Hope this helps,

Larry,
Where might a guy find some Capt. Tolly's CCC?

Boater's World, West Marine, and BOAT/US all carry it.

This 'miracle medicine' (?)for your cracks and crazes is available from West Marine, Defender etc. It seems to work, but how do you know, right? It will not fill a crack up with material however, so the darn things continue to look bad.
Don't have a solution for that..including redoing the deck with Awlgrip. The crazes will show through unless each is leveled out flat. More than likely, the cause of the original cracks are still there, and will continue to cause cracking in the newly filled and painted surface, unless the cause was purely a too-thick gel coat layer, with no external causes.
