A friend whose life is fixing boats thinks a good way to attach a vang to the mast of my weekender is to drive out the pin that fits into the tabernacle slot and replace it with a bail bolt. This would position the bail well, but I’m concerned it might damage the mast. Is the term “keyhole?”
Has anybody tried this? Are there any other hazards to this approach I may not have considered?
Thanks

Re: attaching vang to Ty Weekender
make it easy on yourself. on the front of the mast down low there may be a small padeye as original equipment. if not just add one with rivets. run a length of 1/4 braided rope thru the eye, add a small block onto the rope and tie a knot. this will be the lower attachment point as is my original equipment vang arrangement.

Re: attaching vang to Ty Weekender
Dale,
I had a vang bail installed exactly as your friend suggests. As
expected, it is working very well. The bail bolt simply replaces
the step pin so I do not expect mast damage will result. We used
a self-locking nut so the tabernacle "ears" are not compressed.
