hey guys....im shopping for a new anchor for my cd 25. i have a 18 lb danforth style but i need something that i can leave the boat over night with and feel safe....im looking at a 22 lb bruce or simpson larwence claw anchor..maybe with the danforth as a kedge. the bruce is about 2 times as much and looks like it was investment cast rather then sand cast like the claw appears to be....but does this help it hold better? they appear to be pretty close to the same shape. is there really and holding power differnece between the 2?
thanks

Re: bruce vs claw
Dan,
I don't know whether there is any real difference between the two. I do know that if you tap each with "tuning fork" there is a difference in the sound. I do know that the Simpson-Lawrence version is made in the PRC, and the term "Chinese Copy" comes to mind. Probably the pertinent question is: Do you want to bet your boat that a "Chinese Copy" is going to hold it in a 50 knot blow?
By the way, since we are on the subject, can anyone find any galvanized shackles that match the WLL of the fine ACCO chain which is made in the USA. Indeed, most of the shackles found in West Marine, Boat US, and other well known chandelries are made in the PRC, which means that you have no way of knowing what is the WLL for these items.
Having said all of the above, I will add, for the contra, that i haven't heard of any failures of either the Claw or the shackles.

Re: bruce vs claw
The authentic Bruce made in Belgium and the authentic CQR made in Britain are both drop forged I believe. At least they used to be. That used to be molded right into the shank. In drop forging the metal is molten and then a huge weight that weighs as much as a house is dropped on the metal and compresses it into the mold. This causes some molecular change and strengthens the metal. That's why you pay so much for it. It's much more than an investment casting although it has that sort of look. When the Chinese or whoever start making cheap imitation they usually skip that forging process and just pour molten metal into the mold. It looks just like the same anchor but it has no where near the strength. That's what you're paying for when you buy the authentic Bruce made in Europe at the high price.
The original Northill anchor which is still the best anchor ever made in my view (and is the one that Jacques Costeau used on Calypso you may have noticed) was forged. When Northill went out of business and sold the design to Danforth, Danforth made a version that is welded rather than forged. Something like the welded claw. I wouldn't trust that one in extreme conditions. I have seen many bent and twisted Danforth style anchors, but I will bet that none of you has ever seen a bent CQR or Bruce. In normal times anything works, of course, but in extreme conditions is when it matters what your anchor is made of. When choosing an anchor, it's not a matter of looking at the shape and saying these two look about the same and then comparing prices. JMHO
