LORAN info, Micrologic US1 Voyager

Post by Leo MacDonald »

Hi CD'ers,

During the LAST sail of the ketch Heather Ann's summer CDSOA Sail Extravaganza, her LORAN started flashing an "ANTENNA SHORTED" message. The antenna connection on the back of the receiver was not assembled correctly - will rework this week. But, I'm still trying to find out info on my LORAN. I telephoned & e-mailed the 'International LORAN Assoc." (Formally the "Wild Goose Assoc.") - Left Msg :-((

I tried to telephone "Micrologic, Inc." at 818-998-1216 - No Answer.
Looked them up in the Internet, white & yellow pages - No Joy.

My questions are:

1. Any LORAN Chat Boards / Bulletin Boards? [like this one :-))]

2. Is "Micrologic, Inc.", 9610 De Soto, Chatsworth, CA 91311, still in business?

3. I measured 322 ohms at the antenna cable at the back of the receiver, is this 'normal' for a Micrologic US1 Voyager?

Thanks :-)

Leo,

Please visit this website for information regarding Micrologic. They apparently went out of business in May 1999 but there's still help available.

I believe Micrologic was purchased by ICOM. Perhaps they can be of help. They have a website; just search for ICOM.

Captain MacDonald,

Sorry to say that they went belly up in 1999. The website Catherine provided is a good place to look for repair outfits. I noticed it indicated that the West Marine repair Center may be able to help. Maybe give them a call. Short of that, I'd fix the connector, AND dry out anything you can get to. Maybe take a hair dryer to the antenna on your stern rail. Water would raise hell with the antenna.

Oh, and be sure the unit is grounded, there is probably a connector on the back of the unit.

Hope it works for you....

Leo and Dave,

Joe is right. ICOM purchased the assets of Micrologic, Inc. So ICOM would be another source but they may not support the lorans. It's worth a try though.

Loran Coupler - anyone know source?

Post by Brian W. »

We've got an old Mircologic whose coupler was fried.

No one local has one, and I was wondering if anyone had a source for one (tried e-bay) or if they're prohibitively expensive such that it wouldn't be worth it.

We used it as a backup to the GPS, but will likely scrap it and pickup another gps as a backup.

just wanted to check if anyone knew a source.

thanks,

Brian

Leo,

I have a Micrologic ML-8000 and manuals. In the troubleshooting section they indicate that the error message you are seeing could be for three reasons:

1. Shorted ACU connector
2. Defective antenna coupler
3. +8 V DC regulator bad

In the remedy column, the suggest:

1. Unplug ACU Connector, fault message should clear. Reconnect.
2. Inspect antenna cable for possible cut or short circuit problem
3. Consult dealer or factory [Oh well].

ACU = Antenna Coupler Unit

If you need more info from my manuals, just let me know.

Regards,

Ken

Update & Thanks All - LORAN info, Micrologic US1 Voyager

Post by Leo MacDonald CD30K »

Hi CD'ers,

Thank you all for the assist. (So far no joy from ICOM.)
I had a Navy Electronics Technician rebuilt the existing connector with a resultant resistance of 354 ohms.

The LORAN is now operational again!! :-)

Anyone know of a Technical Manual' source?

Thanks again.

Fair Winds,
Leo
