Use of injector cleaner

Use of injector cleaner
Does anyone add injector cleaner to their fuel tank? I add it to my cars tank every year, but would it work on disel?

I do not specificly use that product, but cannot see why it would not work. I do add Automatic Transmission Oil, 1 qt. per summer, to the tank, This serves to do the same thing in a round about way.
Just watch the concentrations, as they are usually alcohol based I believe.

Re: Use of injector cleaner
DLM, Do you add it all at once in one fell swoop, or a itlle bit in each tankful amounting to a quart in a summer? Someone told me that truckers use a gallon of gasoline per hundred gallons of diesel to clean the injectors but not as often as every summer with the kind of hours we put on these boat engines. I've never tried the gasoline trick, but the local fuel dock sells a diesel substitute I beleve is corn oil. They say it smells like corn popping when you run the engine or you can mix it in any proportion with the diesel. They claim a lot of advantages for it. Price, however, is not one of them as it's more expensive than regular diesel. Ever tried that or heard of anyone with experience with it? So far I've been to cowardly to try it also.

Re: Use of injector cleaner
Tom,
The Automatic Transmission Fluid is more of a top end lubricant I believe, but it does have some effect on the injectors also. It was highly recommended by my friend and genius diesel mechanic..and co-owner of the marina I am in. He uses it on all his diesel engines..there have to be 20 of them in various pieces of gear around the place.
Injector cleaners should be ok too. I would just go conservative on the application and frequency until the effect can be judged.
We use the ATF once a year in mid summer..all at once. Generally right before we take off and use the motor a lot. She smokes a little more while doing this, granted.
Biodiesel is a good thing to get into. It smells like popcorn I understand, but the only source I have is in gallon containers from the west coast. As you observed..it's expensive. But I would do it if it were available locally.

Re: Biodiesel
Tom
Back when I could get biodiesel in 5 gallon cans I used it at a 20% ratio with regular diesel. It worked great. Yes, it smelled like french fries. The two years that I used it there was not a single black spot on the transom due to diesel exhaust. I have been meaning to try and find a new source for the stuff. Anyone know of a convenient place on the upper Chesapeake?

Re: Use of injector cleaner
Perusing your local automotive store, there are many products for diesels, from cleaners to cetane modifiers. Would say, stick w/ brand names and read the label. Instead of the ATF, some (me included) go for the addition of Marvel mystery oil (added to the gas and engine oils too). It will not solve the problmes of the world, so dont expect it to.
Re: Biodiesel
Matt,
We also used Biodiesel for two seasons. I thought it smelled more like popcorn than french fries, anything's better than that diesel smell. We were purchasing it from BoatUS then they stopped stocking the 5-gallon containers and we haven't been able to get it since. So if you find a supplier, regardless of location, let us all know.
Thanks,
Cathy
