Bail or Toggle??

Post by Carl Jones »

Greetings to all. I would like to tap into the collective experience and wisdom of my fellow Cape Dory owners to help me install a boom vang on Spanish Eyes, my Cape Dory 30. My question is which is best at the mast, a bail or a toggle? My intuition tells me a toggle is better, but I would appreciate hearing your experiences.

Thanks in advance,
Carl

Captain Jones,

When I installed a vang on Hanalei, the mast was off of her for the winter. I purchased a stainless "U" bolt and drilled two holes inside the sail slide track just above where the mast step flange would be. It is backed with the appropriate washers, and double nutted. Made a nice neat installation, is as close to the deck as you can possibly get it, and if it ever pulls through, I've bigger problems than a broken vang!

The only problem, is that you must have the mast unstepped, I'd wait 'till the fall to do it and you will be all set for next year. Oh, and the "U" bolt is a LOT cheaper than a bail and it looks better!

That sounds like a good idea Captain Stump, but I don't plan to pull my mast, and want to install the vang for a race to Corpus Christi in October. I think the toggle is a better installation than the bail, but it is also more expensive. Such is the way of boats. Thanks for the reply. Carl

Hi Carl,
We installed a Garhauer rigid boom vang on our CD28. The Garhauer mast fitting wraps around the back half of the mast. I used hose clamps to temporarily attach the fitting to the mast. Once I was satified, I sailed the boat for a couple of months, I dropped the mast and thru bolted the fitting.
