storing propane on a cd30?
I am converting from alchohol to propane on my cd 30 but I am at a loss as to where to put the bottles. I had decided to mount two 6# on the bow pulpit in pvc tubes, but I like the idea less and less (windage-following sea damage). I have even considered cutting into the aft cockpit seat to glass in a pre-fab locker, providing something of a high seat for piloting as well as storage - but I am nervous about structural integrity as well as good looks. My purpose is long distance cruising, so conservation of storage space is also important. I would appreciate any input. Thank you.

Re: storing propane on a cd30?
Matt,
We have a 2.5 lb. propane bottle mounted in a vented box at the aft end of the cockpit. The box doubles as a helmsmans seat. We use a 2 burner Force 10, with oven and broiler, and the bottle seems to last quite awhile. Our CD30 is a 1983, so we don't have the built in integrated seat aft of the wheel as you do.

Re: storing propane on a cd30?
Matt,
Take a look at questions posted earlier about alcohol to propane conversion. I recently rebuilt the Seaward Hellerange on Honalei and it works just like new. If you do the maintenence, alcohol is just as reliable and probably safer than a lot of other options. You must also know how to properly prime an alcohol stove(It's not good to have the flames drive the guests and crew overboard when lighting the stove, nor is it necessary). My opinion, for what its worth. Dave.

I had previously read the alchohol messages and agreed - indeed although my Hillerange needed some rebuilding, I had no great fear of it having used them since the early 70s. My concern, rather, is that alchohol is, I understand, mainly a US fuel while LP is generally available throughout the world, where I intend to be beginning this fall. Consequently I believe only diesel/kerosene and LP are appropriate - I dislike both choices, but am opting for LP reluctantly but for a light and easy 2 burner unit w/broiler. Oh for a comodious wooden vessel with a solid fuel stove!

While I don't have propane on Fandance yet, I have a friend with a Triton 28 with a teak box holding his 10 pound cylinder mounted on his cabin top just aft of the mast. A sunbrella cover keeps the water out and the thing looks very "shippy" if you know what I mean. Also there is no worry about a leak from the cylinder because it's mounted outside the boat. The feed line runs into the dorado box and from there to his stove.

Re: storing propane on a cd30?
I have the bottles that can be mounted vertically or horizontally. I
bolted the bottle to a oak board and then used stainless u-bolts and
mounted the board to a vertical part of the stern rail. Works great
and you don't have to worry to much about leaks because it is hanging
off the stern. I have had positive comments from other boaters. I was
worried about aesthetics but it is not bad looking.

Thanks for the response. Do you leave the regulator exposed or with some sort of weather guard? Do you use a thru deck fitting to run the supply, if so, what sort? It sounds like you mount one bottle - have you ever carried an extra, and if so, how do you store it (ie. in some sort of gas proof container)? Sorry for all the questions, I am however quite worried about the setup, being so ignorant.
