CD30 Bomar Hatch Screens
We've just launched our newly acquired jewel of a 1982 CD30, MADNESS III, Hull#235, and we're in the process of outfitting her for cruising. I'm not sure but believe that both Bomar hatches (v-berth and main salon) are original equipment, and when I contacted Bowmar about screens they indicated they don't make them for our hatches. Has anyone experienced this and found an alternative (adapting another name brand screen or building their own)? I know I'm going to have to build them for our companionway, so if I have to for the hatches I can do them all at once. It's great to her hull wet and be off the hill. Thanks.

the previous owner of my boat had homemade screens on the hatches, basically velcro tape around the hatches, w/ matching velco tape around a square of screening. seems to work o.k., and the screens stow anywhere as there are no hard parts, but the tape around the hatches doesn't really seem to accent the otherwise beautiful decor. ought to be inexpensive to make, though.

Re: CD30 Bomar Hatch Screens
Parfait has custom hinged hatch screens with varnished teak frames. The latches are simple turnbuttons. Is that what you call them: small cleats fastened loosely with a single screw through the center? I can get a photo to you in a week or two if you are interested.

Re: CD30 Bomar Hatch Screens
We made screens w/ Sunbrella and snaps. Very simple, and if the screen rips you can just separate the material, replace the screen and restitch. Also very easy to replace the snaps.Chris Schnell wrote: We've just launched our newly acquired jewel of a 1982 CD30, MADNESS III, Hull#235, and we're in the process of outfitting her for cruising. Re: CD30 Bomar Hatch Screens
Hi,
We bought DeLaMer with the velcro screen solution for the overhead hatches, and promptly threw them out as everytime we pulled them off to open the hatch, we would get a shower of velcro junk on our heads..
So I made a teak frame to the size of the recessed opening, routed a 1/8" track in the backside for a screen and rubber gasket to hold the screen in place, then mounted the hinge in the recess, applied a sliding bolt latch to the other side of the screen, and finally filled in the separation between the top of the screen and bottom of the window's recessed opening with urethane foam, cut to size. This has worked well for about 8 years now, and has received many compliments from visitors.
Also, look in Lattitudes and Attitudes ad section. There is a company that makes custom screening for boats that advertises in that mag. They are expensive ($1k for the companionway drop boards and horizontal surface), but if you have the wherewithal, they look Kewl~!
Cheers!

Re: CD30 Bomar Hatch Screens
In 1997 we equipped the forward hatch of our CD 27 with a very good tent-like hatch screen called a "Hatchmaster" from Sea Frost (372 Route 4, Barrington, NH 03825, 603-868-5720). The tent covered the entire opening and was held in place by the weight of a SS chain sewn into the hem. It worked like a dream and required no messy velcro. The Hatchmasters came in various sizes, but I haven't seen them advertised lately.

Re: CD30 Bomar Hatch Screens
How about a BugBuster, is that anything like a HatchMaster? Looks like they use lead shot instead of stainless chain, but the concept is about the same. The link below will give you the particulars.

Hatchmaster lives!
Apparently they are carried by Sea Frost in NH. They advertisee Hatchmasters in the May issue of Blue Water Sailing, but they don't seem to have any specific info on their web site. Here is the contact info:
