Leoma hull to deck joint
Toe and rub rail are coming off easy. They think the bowsprit doesn’t need to come off and the seam is different there covered with a solids plate. I dont know. It’s not that hard. I should make them remove it. They are not unstepping the masts either they want to glass those places by the chain plates one at a time while securing the stays on cleats. I think that will be ok.
Im retired now and have no more income and little savings. This will be the last project that I can hire out

Re: Leoma hull to deck joint
Did they use wood wedges to gently pry the toerail off?

Hi Jim thanks for the response. No need for wedges. After they removed the screws the rails just fell off. Demo is done they are erecting a tent now.

Here are some pics of what is probably a major source of the water intrusion. The hull deck joint is seperated. I need to keep an eye on these guys. They already rebedded one of the backstay plates. They are supposed to remove them and glass under each one and the entire perimeter of the boat. They thought they could cut around them.

Wow. When you consider the fact that on most long passages, even with minimal spray flying, that separation would intermittently seep water 24 hours a day. To say nothing if you were heeled over on that side it would be a steady flow. It certainly didn’t help that the bedding compound for your toerail seems to have hardened and lost all usefulness at some point in the past. This project should pay huge dividends going forward. Good luck.

Re: Leoma hull to deck joint
This is the best thing anyone can do for their boat. Good job. I would remove the bow sprit if possible. I had major deck hull separation there. Yes keep and eye on them. No short cuts giving all you are doing. If done right you won't believe the difference this project will make in the strength and livability of Leona.

Re: Leoma hull to deck joint
I was a little dissapointed cus it’s taking two weeks putting up the tent. They had the structure up them took it down and started over. They must have psychic abilities. The manager just came up and told me I wasn’t being charged for the tent. Nice.
I decided I hate butyl tape. They removed all the hardware I bedded with butyl. It’s not easy to clean off the bolts. I want to reuse them. they are only 1-2 yrs old. They tracked it all over. I tried acetone. Nothing works. At least not easy. I will need a scrub brush with acetone. I wont be able to repaint the decks etc with that stuff all over

Re: Leoma hull to deck joint
Soak the bolts in some mineral spirits. It's not easy but they will clean up. Done it many time.
That's too bad they tracked it around. It's good stuff. But it's sticky and has tremendous elongation which is why it is so good for bedding hardware.
Sometimes sikaflex or similar caulks are more appropriate, as is dolphinite. Different tools for different applications.

Re: Leoma hull to deck joint
I couldn't say. The biggest expense is probably in the fairing...if they do it right. I spent a couple weeks fairing and sanding, fairing and sanding. Your boat is smaller so probably less wide a band of cloth and glass is fine.
Don't be embarrassed. The key thing is to make your boat water tight and stronger too. If you get that completed it will make sailing her and being in her more enjoyable. You can't really put a price on a boat that brings you joy and enable you to voyage offshore.

They are fairing it out pretty good. I’m glad to see the plugged all the holes. They aren’t using the biaxial material I provided. They say it requires too much grinding and will cost so much more. I give up. I know they do nice work. I guess I was expecting too much. I think they will start laying glass tomorrow

I can’t complain. They are doing good. A 2” strip and a 4” strip. I talked to the boss and he says all I had holding it togeather was a few 50 yr old screws and the old mastic. It should last the rest of my life.
I really glad I removed the bowsprit. This will be much betterWDM3579

Re: Leoma hull to deck joint
Thank you for posting this. It gives me an idea of what the hull to deck joint looks like under all the pretty woodwork. I suspect that the joint leaks a bit on my boat. I've seen water running down the inside of the hull in the v-berth. It only happens when sailing in rough conditions when the decks are awash. I rarely go offshore so this may never get fixed but after I have fixed all the other known leaks, I will have to consider the options.

Re: Leoma hull to deck joint
Applying several coats of fairing compound. I really wish they’d unstep the mast and finished it consistent all around. Cutting around the chainplates is almost like they will be recessed a little. Oh Well. I’m not gonna tell anyone. I looked up the cost to R & R the two masts it was $1800 at San Francisco. I think that included rebedding the chainplates padeyes. This yard allready rebeded them probably cost half that
