8-Brait Anchor Rode

Post by Tom Keevil »

We just replaced our manual anchor windlass with an electric one. Age is creeping up on us. Thanks to Paul Danicic for his very useful advice. Of course, like any boat project, it is more complicated than anticipated. We have 100’ of chain spliced to 200’ of three strand nylon rode. The nylon is old and stiff. This was no problem before, as the nylon was entering the locker through the open hatch, but now that it has to enter through a hole in the deck, the stiffness causes it to bind and back up. A new rode is clearly in order, and we are considering replacing it with nylon 8-brait in the hope that it will be both more flexible, and also occupy less space in the rather crowded anchor locker (which also holds our backup anchor). Does anyone have experience with this that you could share? Thanks.

Hi Tom - yes, I switched to 8 plait several years ago and love it. No problems. I don't have a windless though I think it will work
well for you. Good luck - Jean
