I am currently in the process of replacing the outboard for my 1980 CD25("Bonaventure"). I have narrowed my search down to either the new Yamaha 4stroke 8hp or Honda 4stroke 8hp. Does anyone know if there will be any "fit" issues with these engines in the CD25 engine well. Any comments would be greatly appreciated as I need to order the engine soon. Also, any other comments/suggestions on these engines would be welcomed.

When I was purchasing an engine for my CD25 I looked at the Yamaha 8hp 4stroke and could not get it to fit. (This was a 99' model so its possible the dimensions could have changed since then). I ended up going with an 8hp 2-cycle long shaft and it has turned out to be a great choice. The engine has been extremely reliable, fuel efficient and offers more than enough power. Even with the shaft in the water all the time, it always cranks on first try. Good luck and Happy hunting.

I could write a book on this subject. Bottom line: The Honda 8 fits (barely) and the Yamaha 8 DOES NOT. Have used the Honda for five years, great motor, but gets starved for air and will only run smooth when motoring upwind with the engine hatch open.David Miller wrote: Bill,

I went with the Nissan 9.8 2-stroke with alternator. For a two stroke
it burns clean and has plenty of power. It runs just fine with the cover down. at 2/3 throttle it will drive the boat at 4.5 knots burning roughly 1/2 gal per hour.

I recently replaced the Evinrude 9.9 on Brigitta with a Nissan 6hp 4-stroke. Because we have a large barnacle problem and I race PHRF, I wanted something that would be easier to get in and out of water. The 6hp has plenty of power, "almost" fits (I could notch the transom 3/4" but haven't), weights only 60 lbs and is relatively easy to move from cabin sole to mount and back.

I have also installed the 8 HP Honda and its has been great. My experience on the fit is the same. It will JUST fit with a bit of work.
Also, after 3 unsuccessful attempts, my engine will now run reliably with the cover dogged down all the time and have since added a soundproofing kit. It is now quite pleasent if you have to motor.
You MUST duct the bypass fumes out of the well. Which in the end was not all that dificult.
