What is the wood used on the CD 30 bowsprit and what are the refinishing options? Birch? I've taken off all the old varnish, and would prefer not to use varnish again. Options? Also, how to remove dark stains caused by water trapped under chipped varnish?
Thanks,

Re: CD 30 Bowsprit - Refinishing
Your sprit is probably white ash.I don't know why they used ash in this application as it was not a good choice.White oak would have been a better choice and teak or mahogany superior.Birch would not be suitable. If the discoloration you mention doesn't come off with a little sanding use oxalic acid wood bleach, but it will lighten the fibers. As for finish;what kind of ice cream do you like ? vanilla, chocolate or strawberry.Ive used varnish, cetol and armada.I like the later, for its color and toughness.Don Metznik wrote: What is the wood used on the CD 30 bowsprit and what are the refinishing options? Re: CD 30 Bowsprit - Refinishing
Don, my '78 CD30 has the white ash sprit as well. The stuff is like iron;a bear to sand down. A solid hour with a belt-sander finally got through enough damage and discoloration to call it quits, and used Cetol on it. After a year the Cetol darkens to within a shade or two of the toerail. I'd like to see a photo from someone's teak replacement. Unless you've got structural damage, I doubt replacement would be worth the effort for mere aesthetics, but that's your call.
