How much to put into our boats is an intensely personal question. I suggest that you carefully consider the real condition of your engine and how much it will cost to sustain it in place vs the purchase price of a new engine. It is a fact that our boats are 40 years old and that the cost of a new engine installed can be well more than 50% of the value of the boat. We all think we will be keeping our boats forever, but we won't be. Our little 1GMs are tough, parts are available, most thing can be fixed without removing the engine. Considering a new engine should be done cautiously, I think.
Good luck to you as you consider this matter.
