CD 25D engine replacement advice

Post by Amanda N »

It appears we might need to replace our 1GM Yanmar (the original engine) on Caper, our 25D (hull 132). I'm hoping we can avoid that, but just in case, have any of you replaced the engine on the 25D? If so, what replacement engine did you get, and do you have any tips or thoughts?

(As a side note, I'm amazed by how active this board is and how gracious folks are with their advice--what a great community. Hope everyone is having a great summer season!)

Thanks!

What was the diagnosis that led to this conclusion?

On Slainte, our CD27, we went with Electric Yacht and haven't looked back. Electric is far less expensive than a new diesel, completely quiet and requires NO winterization. Range will depend on your chosen battery bank, but we only need a motor to get out of the harbor. With our 220 amp hour rating we can cruise at 3.5 kts for about 30 miles. Docking is so much easier with that electric motor turning over at about 150rpm we can come in at 1/4 kt.

Tim, would your new motor/battery combination have still been cheaper had you kept the requirement to be able to go 6 knots or to be able to motor into heavy seas?

I'm regularly cruising in areas with light winds and need to make 50-mile days.

The electric motor will push the boat up to hull speed with no problems, HOWEVER at that speed my cruising time is down to about 20 minutes. At 3.5kts we can cruise for about eight hours. If you need that range at those speeds you would require a huge battery bank.

Do you have a sense for the speed you could operate at continuously with a reasonably sized (i.e. 2200 watt) generator running?

If you have any intention of cruising or want to recover any part of your investment in the boat, do not go with electric. I am in favor of the concept but the technology is not there yet to make it a practical choice for anything but a lightly used daysailer. I would look at a new Beta diesel as a replacement, they are relatively affordable and are based on Kubota engine blocks so parts are plentiful and relatively cheap compared to Yanmar etc.

She could run at 4-5 kts for as long as the gasoline hold out. This is a method recommended by the ElectricYacht people. Just plug the generator into your shore power inlet and off you go.

If a new 1GM fits and can use the same mounts, then would consider that. The Beta will probably require new mounts and that adds to the complexity and cost of the replacement. Not sure if you are doing this yourself, but if you want the Yanmar warranty on a new 1GM, the installation will have to be approved by a certified Yanmar mechanic. I would check with Mack Boring, the Yanmar diesel distributor.

Beta USA is in NC where you are and has great reviews for being helpful to repower CD’s.
French’s link for a 10hp for $2100 is hard to believe. Let us know how the repower goes!

The price was hard to believe for me too, Pete. I should have looked better at the site. The seller is
in Indonesia and international shipping is extra. Also, I doubt if you would get support from Beta U.S.A.
My Beta 25 was bought through an outfit in Connecticut. Overall, I'm very happy with the engine and
support I received. - Jean

No, Pete, my mother's name was Francoise. But I see great minds think alike naming boats. My boat
was in very sad shape when I bought her and I struggled to rehabilitate her. One day I said something
like "I hope by the grace of God I can do this". So I thought "Grace" would be apt. Take care - Jean
